Raptor 150GB + ICH10 + Vista Install = ME MAD

Guys,

This seems to be a really weird problem but I'm hoping one of you has come across it.

On Friday i finished putting together my new office rig with an ASUS P5Q + two Raptor 150GB's.

Went to install Vista and it got right to the end of the install (Completing Installation), sat there for about 20 minutes and then BSOD'd. During the reboot following the BSOD one of the Raptor's failed to spin up resulting in the ICH10 Raid config screen showing a broken raid array.

On going back into the Vista install it then complains that files were corrupted and it cannot continue. As a result I've tried the following:

- Both Vista x86 & x64 - FAIL

- Installing to either of the Raptors in "IDE Compatible Mode" - FAIL

- Providing Vista with the latest ICH10R drivers during install - FAIL

- Using different SATA ports and Cables - FAIL

- Installing Vista to a Hitachi 500GB hard disk - PASS

- Installing Vista on the Raptors using a different PC - PASS

So, to recap:- Both of the Raptors are OK as they work in a different PC, The system I built works as I can install Vista fine to a different hard disk. It just seems to be a combination of ICH10R (or P5Q) + Vista + Raptor 150gb...

Weird. Have you tried sending the raptors to me? I find that resloves any issues you may be experiencing with said raptors.

Just to recap; you are a spazz and are not worthy of above hardware.

Edit: Are you using the same psu? Only I had a weird issue with a dodgy connection once. Long shot...

Yep. Even with just one Raptor connected (doesn't matter which one). The install still fails.

Thinking about it I've also tried:

- Updating BIOS

- Switching out Memory

- Upping NB/Mem Voltage

- Swapping GPU

- Removing sound card

- Installing Vista from a USB stick

how new is the p5q board?

i remember there being some issues with raptor drives with the samples, but that should have been resolved *shrug*

i had no probs with a p5q3 and raptors (just ddr3 clocks sucked)

Hard Drive Problems

My first experience with this motherboard lasted literally for weeks as we could not get an operating system to successfully install on this motherboard. It was terribly frustrating. There was a hard drive compatibility issue with our Western Digital 150GB Raptors. These hard drives are far from new and quite simply we should not have seen any issues. What is more disturbing is that I am sure this motherboard was being offered for sale in few places and we have verified that this was a hardware issue with both the P5Q3 (DDR3) and the P5Q (DDR2) motherboards. To my knowledge there is not software workaround. So if you are having troubles with an OS install, you might try switching out hard drives or better yet, RMA the board for a newer version.

Asus did finally get us fixed motherboards. Boards number 6 and 7 finally “fixed” the problem in that I could actually fully install our operating system. There was an issue that was troublesome though. With these fixed motherboards I would get random cursor hangs. The cursor would freeze on the screen and not allow me to move it from 1 to 5 seconds. Video was still functional and it seemed as though the system was waiting for a hard drive access to be made. Interestingly enough, I saw the same exact behavior on the P45 based MSI board that we compared to here as well, so it is probably not a board-level issue, but possibly a chipset level issue. I am still waiting to see what becomes of all of this, but it certainly makes me a bit wary of suggesting this motherboard. As you are likely aware, we have two reviewers go through complete system installs and benchmarking suites. Morry did not see any of this behavior, but we also use two totally different hard drive ecosystems.

I know that a bunch of our readers own Raptor hard drives and until I see Asus and MSI address this issue, I simply can’t suggest Raptor owners purchase the board. While a single caveat is not worthy of knocking a board down from getting an award, this is one that will have us withholding any awards till we know the issue has been addressed.

I`m tending to think there`s a power issue going on. Whether it`s the psu powering the mobo or the drive or both.

I`ve seen some compatiblity posts about, and later down the line some retractions as they`d changed a psu or did something *silly* that they over looked.

This a 1.5G raptor or 3G ?

I`d power the raptor from another psu whilst connecting it to the ICH10 and see if there`s any difference.

EDIT: In addition to that, if a pc is booting up too quickly for a drive to report itself back to the mobo as being present, that could cause an issue. Powering the drive via another source whilst booting the pc will negate this.

my 2 raptors are sometimes a bit funny, the raid randomly breaks down, when you go into the intel bios, does it have "error occured" next to one of the drives written in red?

Great stuff. that looks like exactly what it is. As the board is an engineering sample, it would appear to be a POS
