Random Survey - Connecting a PC to a TV

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, so if it's in the wrong place then by all means move it :)

What I wanted to know was if any one had ever managed to connect a PC to a TV and it actually be a viable method of displaying the picture?

When I originally built my silver machine I wanted it as a back up for running RMA and stuff. I put it downstairs (media would have been awesome) and connected it up to my 42" Sammy plasma. However, the picture was not only a load of tripe but it didn't even fit the screen properly. It did detect the HDMI TV but for some reasonw when I resized the picture (to fit properly) it kept reverting back to stock and effing up all the time.

It also looked CACK. In the end I carried the silver lump back up here and rearranged my entire room to run both at the same time.

Sooo.. What are your experiences of connecting a PC to a TV? Has any one managed to get a decent fitted picture out of it? Every time I have ever seen it done it either doesn't work or looks utter cack.

I had my big PC hooked up to my LCD (720p) TV by HDMI. It worked OK, but not great, I think the main problem is the lousiness of the resolution. I tried to connect my old 7800GTX to the TV with component leads, but that picture was beyond awful.

I think having 1080 resolution helps a lot. 720 on a 26" screen (pretty early HDTV, still looks nice) just made reading anything really wierd. The dialog boxes looked too pixellated.

The problem for me was the Nvid drivers. As soon as it picked up my TV it immediately went "AHA ! 1080p".

Sadly my TV isn't 1080p and was desperately trying to downscale the resolution. Nvidia provide a tool that allows you to bring in the size of the screen with arrows (kinda like you could on the Dreamcast). Sadly though as usual their drivers are buggy and as soon as you got it looking half decent and hit apply it just went back to square one :(

I *think* my TV Is listed as 1080i or something. Basically it can accept HDMI but downscales it.

yeah i know that problem! i had it with my ati 4850 on an old old 26" 720p set was losing a good bit of the screen with no way to fix it

i have my new tv workin perfectly with nvidia and an ati htpc card :)

never had a problem pluging my pc in to my 42intch it set its self to the right resolution and fit in the screen fine

I had a 32 inch 720p tv before my 42 inch 1080p and had them both hooked up to my old 4850's and my current 8800gt and the 1080p hooked up to my laptop, the 720p wasnt amazing quality but you could read it fine and with video it looked no different to standard tv picture.

i have done with with all my cards and worked first time with no need to mess with anything auto set the res to 1900x1080
