ram frequency off?

I bought a xfx 750a motherboard and so far it's been great, but as I have been learning to overclock I noticed that the ram frequency is off.

It is suppose to be a 1600mhz, but on ntune it says 916 mhz. I think the reason why it is at 916 instead of 800 is because I have the automatic overclocking on right now set up on the first setting. I tried to use the other to auto overclocking settings, but it won't boot, which is what led me to start looking.

I have been reading that the pc-8500 ram is set at 800mhz and you have to manually turn it up. Are they both the same ram and they sell it as two different ones?strange

I haven't wrote down what it says in the bios, I'll do that in a minute I just wanted to get a post going. I took some screen shots of ntune and cpuz. I know cpuz ram reading doesn't work properly for this type of ram, but the timings should be ok./unsure

Does anyone know what I need to do? I have been spending my spare time trying to learn to overclock the processor and haven't got into ram settings yet. It seems like I won't be able to go any further with processor, unless I can get the ram set right.

oops, wasn't paying attention. lol, I did a google search with 1600 ram and got dd3 ram, now I know why.

I don't think it does. You can adjust the northbride and southbridge. I remembered I took some pics of the bios for the processor when I was first starting, but I didn't take any of the ram settings in the bios. I'm gonna get log off and get those pics right now. sorry, for not being more prepared.

Woa, did a windows update before i logged and it screwed up my displays, for some reason it swapped my monitors, It took me forever to figure out how to swap them back.

Alrighty, here's a screen shot of the dram mode and the memory clock. I took the pics with in auto mode and out of. I was thinking it might have a setting for the fsb if I take it out of auto mode. They make you open up the computer and swap a jumper. no biggie

Cos its DDR2, dual data rate, the reported speed of the memory i.e. 1066Mhz is actually 2x the memory clock speed set in the bios. When on auto this would be auto scaled to try and get the best ratio for your processor speed. If you set it to manual, say to achieve 800Mhz, youd have to set it to 400Mhz "memclock value" your mobo calls it. Also performance would depend on the timings set. e.g. mem at 1066mhz and 5-5-5-15 would perform roughly the same as 800mhz memory at 4-4-4-12. I run my OCZ platinum pc6400, which is 800mhz @ 5-5-5-15 stock at 866mhz @ 4-4-4-12 in a 1:1 ratio with my E6300. any help? If you knew that then sorry for being patronsing or w/e

I guess I was looking for a response that tells me what to do to get it up to 1066, which alot of ya'll here probably could. Now that I've researched a little, I see its not quite that simple. The problem with that thought is if there is if an error or problem occurs, then you run into making adjustments and you really can't do that through a forum. It needs to be hands on.

I didn't know most of what you wrote. I'm glad you said that 1066 the 400mhz is 2x the MCS, that explains a ton. Going from trying to learn how the processor works and oveclocking it to ram really is kind of overwhelming, esp. when you didn't know much about it to begin with. The ram has so much more to it, which is why I put off learning it first.

I can see I'm just gonna have to sit down for a week maybe two and just work my way through it.I have found a few good posts explaining it, but unless your practicing what you learn then you lose it.

Do you happen to know any good books on it? I have scott mueller's repairing and upgrading 18th edition, but that really isnt for that purpose. He gives a brief explanation of how it works, but not what to do.

Do they make a Overclocking for Dummies book?

No, it wasn't patronizing to me. I guess if I would have know it, maybe it would have been patronizing. Thankyou for trying to help.

Not sure on books, i learn't what i know from forums, a certain oc forum which i shouldn't link here since its a different one lol. You know about the cpu fsb x the multiplier = to the reported speed. e.g i have a multi of 7 and an FSB clock of 430Mhz, which means 430 7 7 = 3.01 Ghz, my processor speed

I remember a post from ome forum that does a good break down of overclocking. My flaw is once I boot if I don't start messing around in the bios right then, then I won't do it later. I'll start getting into a games (wow, runes of magic, warhammer),emails, or stuff like that. I just learned a few weeks ago about the processor multiplier. I have actually used it a few times messing around in the bios.

Bjorn3d is the official forum for xfx, but I prefer this one, which is why I posted here. You can tell when your learn alot about a forum, by reading the posts. I noticed on this site along time ago, that although there are a ton of posts everyday, most are responded to. Which tells me that there are a bunch people that are trying to help here. I guess though for just some quick settings, I could post there, since there will be people there with same motherboard and they would have gone through the same issues.

Uh oh, time to go the trick or treaters are making there rounds here.

Form what I've read here your getting there. Not sure how far along you are on your learning, but if your just starting take a look here. It's getting on a little but covers the vast majority of the basics of ocing the core 2 line.
