I could of swarn i saw a topic here 2/3 months ago about al lthe differnt RAID configs.

I'm wanting to run it in in my new rig just cos i can and i fancy some speed and also soemthing different but for the love me can;t find the topic

i think Big Phil posted it up and it was done with water bottle showing the differnt ways and the best way to do it!

Erm..... lol? :?:?:?

I am but what setup is best.....then i'll order the drives for it

3-way stripe (RAID0) using an off-board controller..even a crappy £20 controller using a SiL 3114 is fine...takes the 6%+ CPU useage away pretty much

Pete if you have security side of things sorted (, external backup, or its just not required in this case) then go raid0 for a bit of a boost. How much do you want to spend and how much space do you need/want?

Erm say if i got one more 120gb to match what icurrently have will it just be 120gb i have stil las i gues sit copies to and form each other!

OMFG

Right Pete you need RAID 0 (striped) - not sure you know what to do with anything else TBH.

If you want performance then thats what you want - if you have 3 drives (all the same) then you can go RAID 0 +1 which apparently is very good too.

I got all my bench scores with RAID 0 ;)

I did say Mav befor you get on your high horse and other i haven;t bothered with anyhting to do with RAID till now hense why i though of the remote possibilty in asking the group of people who i though where nice, polite, kind well manered people...guess not then eh??

Thanks to all that have spoken to me on msn about RAID and what not...topic can be closed/deleted etc etc

I think it's important for the polite and understanding people to have a better understanding about what you want to achieve from a RAID set-up.

I guess if you lay out your requirements (I want my machine to perform quicker, I want added file integrity, perfromance is not as important as integrity etc.....) - then a suitable RAID set-up can be recommended.

I think there are lots of really good guides on the interweb for you to read up on this first, thats how I started - I found a great website that can assist, www.google.com just type in 'a guide to RAID' in the box at the top (we call that a search bar) and press enter - a number of guides will pop up, read through a few of them and all will become clear.

For instance this one popped up on the search 3rd one down on the 1st page, whcih really is a good tool:

To prove how easy it is to do a little homework, using the search function on this forum I found the following:

Pete, get rid of that Cudda as they are nasty drives, get 2 Hitatchi 250Gb SATA-II, or 2 250Gb Spinpoints SATA-II, and RAID-0 them. If 1 goes down, you WILL loose EVERYTHING on the drives as they act as 1 big drive, but it does offer a little boost in performance.

Raptors are WAAAY overpriced for what they are imho, and really not worth the money. Just stick 2 SATA-II drives in there, it'll run pretty fast.

I find the performance from my 150gb raptors are instrumental in top benchmarking performance - but as boardy said overpriced if the budget is not available (there are better things to purchase with thre cash you could save)

I have to say the hitachi drives are fantastic - bit of a pain to set-up SATA2 (make sure no other SATA leads are plugged into the mobo), but best bang per buck out there right now.

Slightly OT but relevant as well - I am looking forward to the the next gen (or updated) perpendicular mechanism drives which provide the highest density found on a single platter and performance as well as capacity should be fantastic.

I have to agree with the next gen stuff. I don't know if any of you knew or if it was posted here but they have managed to produce a hard drive (used in VERY loose terms), with a hair thin bit of silicon and water.

The water can store around 1000Tb of data, it's incredible what they are coming out with.

As for bang for but on HDDs atm, Spinpoints or Hitatchi all the way, but performance wise the 150Gb Raptors are undoubtly the best. I just couldn't justify spending £150+ on 1 HDD just for performance when you could get 2 of the before mentioned drives for around £120 and have £200+ left over to put on a GFX card budget for example ;)

Cheers guys....very dumbed on Hitatich, had an iDE one die and then worked on a Hitatich digger one day which the jig bent and then snaped, smoke and went bang and caught fire.....so i'm weray of there stuff but they do have good writeups it seams

I'd like the solid state stuff acoming, SATA II as well

Dont agree with your statement regarding Hitachi drives, these have got to be the best sata II drive on the market at the moment, they are not as quiet as the spinpoint but are faster which has been proven on this site, i just think you have been very unlucky or have done something wrong to have had problems and as for a digger what has this got to do with hardware.

so i would say get the Hitachi sata II drives and put them on raid 0, you could even get 4 of these and have cash to spare and put them all on raid 0 which will improve benches and apps no end.
