R700 is faster than GTX 280

IF AMD releases an X2 card you just know Nvidia has a GX2 variant of the 280 lined up for this. Either way, with these chips you really have to look at single card performance becasue 2 cards or 2 chips on one card is going to be hell with the heat.

The 9800GX2 wasn't all that bad for heat really... but I can imagen the 280 to be hell. Considering it is hot on its own.

No sultan. Just been fed up with not being able to run games maxed out for years so thought i'd build me a rig to last a while that'll handle stuff no probs.:) Just waiting on a couple of more parts to arrive before build starts. I'l post when its started. (couple of weeks?).

Read a review of the 280 in single/sli/tri-sli against other cards. (ati/gx2). Tri gave pretty much no improvement over sli. Sli 280 left everything else for dead, by a long way. This was using a QX9650 oc'd and it still bottlenecked. Think the 280 is defo a good bit of kit for the future and price wise its not that different from the gx2 when it came out. There will always be 'better value for money'. Such is life with all things. But at the end of the day, who gives a monkeys....sometimes....:D

Out of all those articles that smithy posted, the ones that worked seemed really weird.

For example:

PCPer used different cards for each and every game. One minute the 4870 is being compared to a GTX280, the next to a GTX260.

Hexus didn't even include the 4870.

Bjorn3D didn't either...

Jim, I just C&P'd assuming they worked...

I was thinking about buying a 280 from the US but... It isn't awesome enough. I buy too many gpu's so I'm not getting enough of a noticable improvement. If the X2 can beat the 280 great, like Bungy said 280GX2 it up and it will kill ati's offering.

I like the r700, at $300 it's cheap and pretty good performer.

*I'm waiting for the GX2 killer*

Think that`s the problem now Mr.Smith. Since u got a flavor for x2, the single cards aren`t going to cut it. It`ll be a matter of w8 for 9900x2 or sometime bite the bullet and goto a single card and start afresh. Something like that will only happen if ur card craps out tho.

I don`t predict any *killers* for years tbh, and if they come, I don`t see anything other than a Crysis3 breaking it`s back.

I did seriously think of trying the 4870, as an experiment into Ati too. Seems as tho the last prefered mobos I`ve had boast xfire.. and the slot is just lying there.

Have to get the newest Abit x48 first, in order to shuffle some boards about, and take it from there. Probably end up with a 280 tho.

The first reviews show that the 4780 tops the gtx260 or it performs the same and it's about 60€ cheaper, and with the new drivers who knows. It's been said that the drivers will take care of the power consumption of the 48xx cards. Ati looks better and better to me. My favorite for now is the 4870 and you could later upgrade it with a 4870x2 and go for crossfireX. :yumyum: But I’m going to wait till overclock3d will bring the reviews before I finally chose my new gpu.:corn:

It`s strange that, a set of reviews I saw via linkage on the uabit forums, showed the nVidia to Idle at a lower power consumption than the ATi, and the reverse is the case under load.

May not sound so relevent, but u don`t game 24/7.. well not every1 does :p

Sorry for the double post but just figured id post this before somebody replies.

(For us US peeps)

This 9800GX2 can be had for $419 and will outperform a single 280 or crossfire 4870 for less than either. For you 9800GX2 owners, you are king for now in bang for buck.

GX2 doesn't beat the 280... It's a mixed bag of results. Xfire 4870 will beat both when GX2 and 280 when games utilize both cards and drivers get a lil better.

But yeah if you have a GX2 then no point in changing.

GX2 kicks out more heat than the 280..... Just.

It seems Nvidia really got their power profiles working decently on the 200 series. It clocks them down very low when in a 2D environment. But like you say, the majority of time spent is far from full 3D load.

I was looking at it from a GX2 POV... so if they made a GTX 280 GX2 thing then it would be roasting. :)

Yeah it would cook. They would need to do something drastic to cool it. Stock LN2

9800GX2 is still by far the best deal going right now for US customers. It takes 2 4870s to beat it which in turn is 200 bucks more than a 9800GX2. Those same 4870s cost the same as a GTX280 but outperform it. And it would cost about 1200 for SLI 280s to whoop everything. Pretty rediculous.

ATI 4870x2 show off!

Do you think this card is going to beat the GTX280 on performance and prices?

also i really like the looks xD similar to Asus Hybrid ROG 9600GT
