R700 is faster than GTX 280

No it's not, but it looks pretty awesome!

Ahh that's alright then. Was saying the same to Tox over MSN Smithy. Slap two together though and it'll do it in wont it at the same-ish price?

Or just wait for the X2... Wish that was out now!

Edit: Cheers for the links Smithy.

Man... 4870 looks really good and looked like it would topple a single 280 in Crossfire, but it seems it scales horribly. So for $300 x 2 you can have Crossfire or just pay the extra $30 and get the single card 280. Same sort of sound and same soft of heat as well as power consumption. Meh.

Anyway Tox... Hurry up with ya news ;)

4870 = OCed 4850. 300 bucks for 4870 or 199 for 9800GTX? The GTX stomps it. So, yea the X2 is gonna be horribly priced and it would be more worth it to buy a 280.

I've just seen another review that contradicts the first one I read... OC3D for Crossfire 4870s!! :)

I don't think I've got room for two 4870's in ma 900 anyway so 280 it is and if the X2 smacks it then I'll just flog the 280 and buy the X2 and save some dosh.

Once I finish the article(again) you will see that I am referring to the Dual chip. ;)

Cool x2 possibly ftw...

Lets see what the new drivers do, and the x2 might be better, who knows. I want to see these in CF, for $600 I'd probably get a pair, or maybe the 280... Fra-aaag ;)

4870 = gddr5 and an oc, 4850 = gddr3 :)

@ Tox (article).. If ATI could have got the X2 ready to release along with the 4850 and 4870 it would have put them in a strong position. It doesn't come as much of a surprise to me that it will beat the 280 as if the 280 was better than 2 of ATI's best cores slapped together then they might as well just pack it in now.

Nvidia could just 280GX2 it up... Obviously easier said than done but if needed I'm sure they could come up with something.

@ Smithy.. I've been waiting for some 4870 results as in a week or so I'm having either a 280 or 2 X 4870s brought back from the States for me. 280 is like $640 so that's not soooo bad. While 2 4870s will probably out do the 280 with driver updates, the hassle associated with it all the way up to selling them both when finished with them, I think I've decided on the 280. So possible non compatibility or funky results in Crossfire / SLI wont be an issue and even if it drops in price, I should still be able to break even and buy an X2 if it stomps it in August :)

Forget ati. 280 sli with water oc'd up to the hilt. Job done.:D

errr.....so you must be related to the sultan of brunei then?

personally i think Nvidia have lost the plot at the moment with all the same old cards with different numbers then the stupid price hikes on cards, this is ATI's turn to be "king of the hill" for a while at least

But they aint and they wont be until they release their X2.. Even then we don't know for sure. But it should be.

Wrong. The 280 still tops the 4870 Xfire so the hopes of the X2 "stomping" it is a wee laugh. Lads, just buy a 280 and be done with it.

I am buying 280 :)

But so far the reviews have varied quite a bit so it's hard to say whether 4870 Xfire beats the 280.. I suspect with a decent set of drivers, it will by a bit.

But even if they do they can't claim the "crown" until both cores are on one card. If you're talking bang per buck then it'll be something like SLI'd 8800GT's or Xfire'd 4850's or similar. If you're talking performance on one card then it's the 280 and that's where the X2 will come in, and if your talking about overall performance in a set up then that's where Xfire 4870's and SLI 280's come in. In which case just Tri-Sli some 280s and that wins.

IF AMD releases an X2 card you just know Nvidia has a GX2 variant of the 280 lined up for this. Either way, with these chips you really have to look at single card performance becasue 2 cards or 2 chips on one card is going to be hell with the heat.

Sorry for the double post but just figured id post this before somebody replies.

(For us US peeps)

This 9800GX2 can be had for $419 and will outperform a single 280 or crossfire 4870 for less than either. For you 9800GX2 owners, you are king for now in bang for buck.
