it will only make noise when you are watching/burning, and even then it wont be very loud at all. noise is pretty hard to avoid from a dvd-rw, but i must say my NEC is one of the louder ones out there.

although, i fully recommend NEC for quality, pretty much the best you can buy

I was looking into the last couple of week, i honestly have forgotten whats inside my htpc!! (lol, been a long weekend). Avoid sony like a plague.

Most of the forums, articles etc i've read, people are most happy with lite-on drives.

You could always use drivespeed (i think?) from nero to slow the drive down.

EDIT: I brought the pioneer dvr111db, I will have most dvds on hard drive so it wont matter too much, but i should have it installed shortly and will report back.

Yes, I agree. Every PC in my house has an NEC drive cept mine. Why? Replaced my two NEC burners for one Lite On SATA DVD Burner just for cable management.

While the NEC was slightly faster, the Lite-On is MUCH quieter. They're both around the same price and I reccomend both equally. Just depends on what you want.

I had the NEC ND-3540A btw.

for some stupid reason i didint buy a sata drive :( i also know the ide slot on the motherboard is in a weird spot :(

The liteon SATA drives look good. I can get rid of one ugly fat ide then too.

Keep it comming guys:).

Plextor is my choice, iv had my drive for over 3yrs when DVD burning came out, its silent sleek, and sata so no thick ide cables. =P
