Quick Guide: Setting CS:S rates

I'll just post in this thread since it was the one I found when I searched Google for how to fix my CS:S rates.

I was just wondering what would be the best way to fix an already choppy picture in-game. I tried messing with my rates a little bit but it didn't really work at all. Internet connection is good and system requirements should be too. A friend who's an admin told me to check my rates which brought me here. Help is greatly appreciated.

What exactly is choppy? Everything (including scenery) or just other players?

And does it occur when you run a local server?

Most of the time, just other players but it seems when there's a lot going on (nades, multiple firefights), its everything.

Not sure about the "local server" issue because I'm not quite sure what's local and what isn't...I'm very new to CS:S. Just installed it Saturday.

Ah right, well a local server is when you run the game and click Create Server rather than Find Server. Here you play against computer controlled BOTS rather than other players.

If it occurs down the Create Server route the issue is with your computer, not the internet settings / internet.

Could you both post your computers specs and during a game, open the console (shown in OP) and type net_graph 3, then when the choppyness occurs, hit F5 to take a screenshot, which you can retrieve from the steam installation folder and post here. This should give a slightly better idea what may be causing it.

Are you trying to run it on the Xpress 200 chip you have in your profile?

If so its called low fps...

Tried it on a local server and it's still slow/choppy but not nearly as bad as with other games...almost manageable. If that's how my other games played, I wouldn't mind nearly as much.

Yes. So...is there a way to accommodate for a low fps or am I screwed and might as well invest in a desktop?

oh right so youre using a laptop....

Umm you can increase the heapsize (google that) your game uses and drop all the video options down to low settings. Other than that I would suggest making the move to a desktop and keeping the lappy for browsing and word processing

You could also google "casey's config" but i doubt it would offer much improvement

The Xpress 200 is a very weak chipset, its not designed for gaming at all, only office work. Better invest in a new pc :)

I found some info on running it on a low end PC, check this out. http://forums.counter-strike.com/cs-source/97-faq-cs-s-low-end-users-fps-help.html

...well, thanks for the help guys. I'll give it a shot. Maybe my parents will let me steal their desktop and bring it back to school with me since they both have laptops now.

As far the heapsize fix, all the results I'm seeing are for Java. Is that what you were talking about or am I really lost?
