Question about stress tests

From watching J J on you tube, if I remember correctly he said not to use non-validated stress tests like prime 95, geekbench, ooct. The only one I've ever seen him use is Aida 64. What are your opinions on this ? I would like to know before I blow something up !

For testing stability quickly, i.e. when you're first bumping up clocks/down the voltages etc., Intel Burn Test's 'Maximum' setting is a great stress test. During IBT your CPU will get as hot as it most likely ever will - the test is known to generate the most heat.

For testing long-term stability Prime 95 is often a good choice. Leave it overnight or even longer to test if your system is truly stable.

As long as you're not stupid with the volts you should be fine.

Ok got it. Thanks for the info. Now another question. I can't seem to get my cpu to idle. According to cpu-z and cpuid, it stays at 4.2. no matter how much I play with voltages, LLC, etc. Eist is enabled. what else should I check?

Speed Step..

I remember on my MSI mobo for whatever reason I had to enable turbo for it to drop and jump. But tbh speed step is junk causes instability and is pretty pointless considering your manually changing your volts.

What power option are you using in windows? Mine only downclocks if it's set for balanced, but you can also customize high-performance profile to downclock on idle.

Wow !!! You nailed it. !! I never even knew that option for the processor was available. I must have looked at that menu a hundred times. Thanks much. Happy Holiday's !

yup, i ran into the same issue in the past, was surprised to found out that the balanced power options makes all the difference.

yes that also works. I never set the power profile to High performance anymore. Although I have an overclocked CPU it doesn't affect my OC. CPU is completly stable.

I'm a big user of Prime95 and I use OCCT a little,Most of the time it Prime95.
To monitor everything,I use CPUID,CoreTemp, & HWMonitor.
