can the fan hub in the back control pwm fans or is it only for 3 pin fans, also is it possible to adapt 4 pin fans to 3 pin?

PWM fans can be run via traditional voltage control, so yes the hub can control pwm fans. If the connection is just header pins (like the fan hub), you just plug the first three pins in. Most fans should have guide lines moulded onto the plug which prevent you plugging it in wrong.

Basic answer is, if it got 4 pins, it can control them, although if its a hub, it just a splitter for 1 motherboard connection.

It is primarily built for PWM fans, so yes it will if anything work better with 4-pin fans as it doesn't use voltage control for 3-pin fans as to me it reads as if it will use the PWM signal from your motherboard to control 3-pin fans which may result in them clicking.

Phanteks - The PWM hub makes it possible to control all the connected fans (also 3-pin fans) with PWM function through 1 PWM connector and create a better cable management.

Anandtech - 'Pay close attention as well to the velcro cable wraps behind the motherboard tray, as well as the unique fan hub. We've seen fan hubs before and this one initially reminded me of the hubs NZXT employs, but the Phanteks offering is different: it connects to a single PWM header on the motherboard, and provided that header can provide enough power, it effectively allows the motherboard's PWM control to control all of the case fans.'

I took the stock fan hub off as ive got all 3 pin fans and replaced it with two Swiftech 8-Way PWM Cable Splitter`s.
