Quantum Computing Around The Corner?

A Canadian company with substantial venture capital backing claims to have built a "quantum computer" that will ultimately solve problems beyond the power of conventional systems - and will demonstrate it over a live link this week. A cure for cancer or the common cold? Feel free to voice your opinions here...

With only 20 Million dollars in funding and claiming to have marketable products next year I find it very hard to believe.

True quantum computing is coming faster than we are ready to handle it IMO. D-Wave is on to something good here and they have a good system in place with the quantum states building towards the correct answer thus not having to worry about the quantum states collapsing as the load is just shifted to another quantum state until the one that went down comes back up.

Good stuff I say!

I love how it has to be cooled to "just above absolute zero" This computer requires its own cryo-chamber to operate, lawl.

I challenge the fact the bits are at the same state simultaneously. I`d accept that they go from one to the other in a finite amount of time.

All I'm saying to people is that I wouldn't just dismiss this quite yet, you never know what they might have figured out. Just because they dont have teh uber financial backing certainly doesn't mean that they don't have one genius in the company that figured out how to make this work.

Wasn't quantum computing where the PC had to be off to function?
