PSAPI.dll

When I started my computer the last two days i got messages saying there was no PSAPI.dll found. Not such a big problem for starting windows, just press ok and it will start. However I can't start half of my program ( including virus scanner... ).

So I googled some and found a thread which said that I should rename all the PSAPI.dll, except for the ones in windows32, and then reboot.

After that I searched for all the PSAPI.dll and found some in the windows map, but im not sure about deleting them..

These are the locations:

C:\Windows\winsxs\amd64....,
C:\Windows\SysWOW64,
C:\Windows\winsxs\x84_microsoft....,

So I'm going for the secure and check once again wether I can rename those files without getting in even more trouble I'm in already.

Anyone knows the answer?

Do a system restore to the moment to before you got the error... Should solve the problem..

There's probably a start-up program that uses the .dll file. Have you installed anything new lately? It might be a botched program install

I haven't installed anything, neither had any windows update, but it does say I had a windows update at 3-8 ( day before it started )..

I got an automatic system restore on 1-8 though so I'll put that one back

Update:

put it back to 1-8, and when starting up i got the message again. Title of the screen was msseces.exe, if that matters?

Going to bed now though, ill be continuing tomorrow again

This be something to do with Microsoft Security Essentials.....

If you use an Anti-Virus Program like Avast, Norton, AVG etc.....you can uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials and rely on the other AV scanner to keep you safe....

Read a little on it {HERE}

Ive scanned PC for rootkit infections with sophos virus scanner and got a few hits which i removed. Though after restarting my PC I still got an error about the PSAPI.dll.

Currently running a SFC, well see what that brings up

Update:

While trying to open the cbs.log I went to my desktop and noticed everything was alright again. SFC did the thing :) thanks for helping guys
