I love the noctua cooler but i think its too big

what does everyone think of

Prolimatech Super Mega CPU Cooler with 2 noctua nf-p14's

do you think it would compare, i will push and pull air flow towards exhaust.

any ideas let me know thanks

Alot of money once you buy the fans for a cooler thats not as good as a D14 anyways.

Just buy a NH-D14 and have done with it.

ok i understand i guess its Nh-d14 all the way

its a good cooler actualy i will be getting one as i dont want to change my ram/mobo/cpu just to get the DH14.

plus i will be using P12's

i found the Prolimatech Super Mega is near a kilo.

I found a Thermalright true copper, it's nearly 2kg, look: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/thermalright-true-copper-120mm-heat-sink-for-amd-intel-cpu-(without-fan)?

heavy coolers can damage vertical motherboards and are recommended to be used horizontaly. forum posts write dont shake or transport the vertically mounted cooler and remove it. the Prolimatech Megahalems cooler is mentioned and it is lighter than the Prolimatech Super Mega.

A law of gravity is holding a horizontal bar at one end with a weight on the other end is heavier than holding both in a hand. The Prolimatech Super Mega cooler weighs near a kilo and mounted on a vertical board will give more than its weight in stress to the board

i browsed forums and pasted info i found underneath.

Actually, my MB sagged with a Megahalems when it was vertical. I know this because I used a pocket level. Scythe makes Ninja Wire to suspend heavy heatsinks, but you can use wire from the hardware store, or even zipties. The key thing is to get a level in there to see if in fact your cooler sags.

Ironically, the even heavier NH-D14 does not sag very much, and I can't explain it. Where putting in a hold-up wire improved my Megahalems temp a half degree or so, trying to correct the very minor sag in the D14 made my temps worse.

this is a consideration post ofc

If you want something more slim i'd get the Thermalright Archon, depending on the Review it's either really close to or even better than the Thermalright Silver Arrow and the Noctua D14... the only downside is that it's 170mm tall, so you should make sure your case is wide enough:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/thermalright-archon.html

The Noctua NH-D14 is the best cooler on the market. That flimsy little thing wouldn't come close, I can guarantee it.

There is a reason why the Noctua is so big, its all about thermodynamics. The smaller the heatsink, the lesser the performance, as simple as that. It also comes down to heatsink design, which is why the noctua is superior to the silver arrow, it has a better design for airflow. The only thing you will find that will perform better than the NH-D14 are only but the more expensive water cooling kits, not the corsairs or aseteks, those are all gimmicks.

Thing is, if you buy the noctua...you'll have it forever...you can use it over and over! That Thermalright archon sure would look cool and that sabertooth military lookin board though eh?

The Super Mega is just a Prolimatech Megahalem with a little bit of copper here and there in the reviews I've read it only makes a 1-2*C difference. The Noctua beats the Megahelem by a few degrees, but the cost of getting a Super Mega with two Noctua fans will mean you're paying around 20% more than a D14 to get the same temps. It's just pointless really.

why do most reviews disagree withh you?

Because i use 2 of them and not a single english site ?! and there are links that say the D14 is the best
laugh.gif

and when did i say i didn´t read reviews ?

the ones you come up with seem a bit dodgie
blink.gif

dude, did you even read the reviews?

where exactly was the D14 the best? and two of them actually are english.

and how are they dodgie, because non-english speaking people are not trustworthy?

First link, there's a 1C difference, which is consistent with the results at OC3D, however at the very extreme, at incredible high temperatures, the Noctua will edge ahead of the Silver Arrow, of course the difference is minimal so going with either is ok, but at the top of the thermal charts, which this site doesn't go to when temps are at 80C+ Noctua will come out ahead.

Second , Third, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, etc. All the same story. Yes at lower temps the Noctua isn't the best, but it's only a degree or two off, similar results were recorded here at OC3D. But once you start hitting extreme temps, with borderline suicide runs on the CPU, so I'm talking about 80C+ the Silverarrow becomes incapable of dumping the heat, and the Noctua will come out ahead by a significant margin.

Yes it isn't the best at low temps, yes it the Silverarrow with have a slight edge at most temperatures, but once you get to the extremes the Noctua NH-D14 is KING.

EDIT: Hexus doesn't count because they invert the Noctua and use a box with next to no airflow as the case.

EDIT: Vortex.co.uk The Noctua is 0.25*C hotter than the Silverarrow? That's probably within the margin of error for their test equipment.

K i am not going to waste my time on someone that just doesn't get it

not sure whu you try to proof that the D14 isn't a great cooler
blink.gif

but have a great day ...

@Zeals:

regarding tom's review, sure, the D14 'only' got to 90°C or so, but in Tom's words: " Over 80°C is not something we like to see at all."

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/thermalright-silver-arrow_5.html#sect0

core i7980x @4.41 GHz... ?

so even if we disagree with xbitlabs review and accept oc3d's as fact, who would run an i7 @4.4GHz on air with tempsover 80°C?

For benching purposes?

http://hwbot.org/forum/showthread.php?p=83014

and what about the more quiet Thermalright fans that tom doesnt even mention in his review, when he praises noctua fans like all the time for their low noise?

just to make it clear, im just an heatsink enthusiast, who does some testing too, both are great heatsinks. And btw, i'm a proud owner of the D14, the silver Arrow, the Archon and the super Mega, and a lot more lol

@Snw:

Great Arguments there, mate!

where did i say the D14 is not a great cooler, obviously it is, just like the silver arrow or the archon. At the end of the day one degree more or less either way is not a factor anyway. i was just giving the threadstarter the advise to look at the Archon, because he searches for a slim, high end cooler, wich the archon is, and i got this response: "That flimsy little thing wouldn't come close, I can guarantee it."

that's where i started arguing...

So in conclusion benching and suicide runs Noctua hands down although a Silverarrow will also do well, general use, a lot of choice, Noctua among the best along =D.

Also the Noctua is better looking than the Silverarrow. Sure the cream and brown isn't the best colour choice for a lot of cases, but at least it's better than cream and light blue
tongue.gif
Also you have to admit the Noctua is a solid cooler, it just feels like a tank xD
