1. they are for casual games and children, they always have been. but they are trying to change that. and whilst trying to do that end up making consoles more like computers which defeats the point in a console.
Having friends that play on consoles and so you do too does not mean its not for casual gamers and kids. it just means most of your friends chose a platform that is for casual gamers or kids.
consoles used to be perfect great for casuals and kids because of no updates, no internet needed. plug in and go. slit screen multiplayer, or one screen multiplayer like bomber man etc. But they have removed a lot of those features. making them less accessible to the casual gamers and kids. which is stupid. no one wants to hook up a console then wait an hour for an update. it defeats the point of even having one "thats why i dont have one"
2. see point1. prior to the 1st xbox consoles were still consoles. and the 1st xbox was the one to start dragging them down the path of mini dedicated computer.
Having a computer means you can do anything you want on it. where as a xbox was locked down to gaming, although we used to modify them and then the were great because you could do things on them like run emulators "which you could do on a pc any way, without mods"
3. backwards compatibility on a pc is really only limited to the what bits it or the installer runs at.. a 64bit system for example can run 32bit or 64 bit. . a 32 bit can do 32 or 16. and a 16 bit can do 16 or 8bit. so i can play any 32 bit or 64 bit game i want on my pc, which is backwards compatible 0 problems. if i want to use a 16bit game then it is possible via emulation. So no issues here with backwards compatible games. hell i can even play some console games or classic computers like a zx spectrum or c64/amiga via emulation, so given that your argument is a console is a pc. then there is no reason why they cant be backwards compatible. the old ps3 was backwards compatible using hardware, then the second version was compatible via emulation chip. then they decided to just not bother.
4. like i said i see a wii having its place in the gaming world as it at least understands what a console is supposed to be, as for the moving of com, puters.,, personally i do not get this argument. i have a dual cpu server system in the living room my wife uses that one and it is capable of gaming at mid/low settings 1080p 60fps (probably better than your console) i have my main gaming system upstairs which is Much better than your console. And then i have my media system which is connected to the tv, this is only a dual core system with lower end hd 6xxx gpu. It is not designed for gaming at all. but it could play games if i wanted to on it. Also I have a laptop in the kitchen (my wife also has one that she keeps behind the sofa)
I can share my steam sames with every one of these computers and laptops. either by using the friends and family feature. or by having the same account logged in on multiple systems.
Even if i did not have all these systems, a decent gaming laptop is easily just as or even more mobile than a console. and with wireless controllers and steam big picture can connect to and sit under the tv in any room i want. and even in any room that does not have a tv, or on a car journey "provided you remember to set steam to offline mode before you lose the internet"
so your argument of moving a console around is inavild because it is no where near as accessible as a good gaming laptop. and even if it was as accessible (which it isnt), it is no where near as versatile.
5. Consoles always have been for casual gamers and kids. its just the facts of the matter..
And as you brought up money..
If you were to go on ebay now and pick up second hand but fully working components and build a pc. Whilst buying a brand new psu and hard drive because theres no point going second hand on a psu and hard drive. And you also wanted to buy a brand new vive. You could do that and buy everthing to make the pc capable of running the vive for less than £1400.. if you dont want the brand new vive, then you can make a VR ready PC for less than £700.
if you just want a computer thats the same spec or a bit better than an xbox one. brand new in parts your looking at about £300 But you can do so much more with it than just play games.
And one last point. the money thing you brought up is a pointer to the fact that the console mfrs still know consoles are for casual gamers and kids..
they make them cost as little as possible because parents can buy them for kids, and the casual gamers dont mind spending the money knowing they will only play it a few times a week, and they should have a long life span.
But as we have seen, consoles just arent up to scratch and cannot keep up with current hardware. hardware progresses much faster these days than it used to when consoles were king (8-16bit era) so they are being forced to release new ugraded versions every few years. which is the Final nail in the console coffin.
It used to be you could but a console and say:
"i dont want a pc, as i dont want to have to update all my games. i just want them to work"
thats gone away now.
"i dont want a pc because they are really expensive"
Cant really argue that now either as you can get a decent (not great) 1080p 60fps system for a few hundred £
"i dont want a pc, because i like to play on the tv with a controller"
that went away years ago.
"i dont want a pc and have to install my games and need the space on a hard disk"
Again thats gone away.
Which only left:
"i dont want a pc and have to upgrade every few years to play the newest games at the highest settings"
and now that has gone away too.
you will undoubtedly argue, but we can still play the newest games on the old console at lower settings...
But No you cant argue that. because that argument wasnt good enough for you when pc users told you that..
So what you have ended up with is 1 reason. 1 Final reason why you want a console. and that reason is.
"my friends play these games on consoles so i do too"
And that is no reason to hinder your self with all the bad points of pc gaming. for less performance more expensive games. less exclusives, less choice and less versatility..
and if you think My argument was childish.
to have the argument "i do it because my friends do it" is the most childish argument in the books.
