Project CuB

The thing about Modding, the problem as it were, is it's an itch that has to be scratched once in a while. Trouble is, the more you scratch it, the worse the itch gets.

Having managed not to scratch mine for nearly a year now it's all gotten too much for me and I just have to undertake a Project.

The particular itch that's been tickling me for a while started nearly 2 years ago when I began a mod of an old (very old) Thermaltake Mozart case (Project Modzart). Sadly the project was never completed, however it did serve to provide inspiration, as I simply fell in love with the interplay of Mate Black and Copper.

As you can imagine having decided on the theme I was "delighted" :( to see that Alpenwasser already has a Black and copper build well underway. I won't pretend for a moment that i'm in his class, but I do hope to bring together something interesting and individual.

This will most likely be a slower burner project, and whereas a large amount of the plan is decided a lot of it will evolve as I progress through the early stages of planning and the build. So without further ado.....

Project plan

Case
this will be the Excellent NZXT Phantom 630. Having reviewed it a few months back I was rather taken with it. In Particular the build quality and the Excellent Matte Black finish.

Hardware
At present i'm planning to use the Hardware currently inside the NZXSPC build that it my current daily driver/gamer machine. This may change, in particular i'm hoping to get enough funds together for a new GPU.

Cooling
None of the cooling has been decided upon. However I am planning to mod the case to accept not just a 360 in the roof, but a 360 in the front also. With that amount of rad I hope to be able to go down the lower fan speed route but we'll have to see.

The exteio of the case will remain largely unchanged however I will be modding in a full size window replacing the letter box affair the case came with. and of course losing the fan and the grill in the door.

A few changes are going to be made inside. Although the 630 will accept a 240 in the front it has to be a fairly slim affair. OK, so the drive bays can be removed but unfortunately the plinth on which they stand is still just a little too high to enable a thick rad or push pull set up be put in here.

Main rack removed with a 2 drive section moved to the posterior position

With the plinth entirely removed there's no way to mount the drive cages.

The solution is to cut the anterior section away along the line shown by the ruler and replace the posterior section

I'll also going to have to take out the 5.25" bays (after first checking that our chosen alternate reservoir pump option is viable)

Fortunately it's a mix of screws and rivets and should be an easy enough job. Failing that I'll just chop the base out

So that's the plan so far. Some ideas are firm, others are still evolving.

Subscribed! I also have this case so very interested to see what you do

I loved it when I reviewed it a while back and have been waiting to get started. I think it has a lot of promise.

im in, looks like it should be very interesting

Thank you and Hope so :)

Subscribed. I want to see how it turns out.

Looks good, will follow :)

Many thanks guys.

been giving quite a bit of thought to radiators, and in particular the interplay between thickness/FPI and fan speed CFM and static pressure.

I've opted to have a slim (30mm or less) 360 in the roof. This will enable me to strap a set of 25mm think fans underneath on push and a set in the roof space in place of the 200mm that come with the case pulling on extract.

The trouble is really the front rad and fan combo. By taking out the 5.25" bay i'm also able to get a 360 in the front in a push pull config. I'll have a total of 145mm of space, which amounts to 95mm of radiator, not tha i'm thinking of using all that, maybe a 60mm think will be fine....But who knows

If I'm going push pull what fans would people recommend? Again i'm thinking GT1450s should give me the performance I need when I need it and can be stepped down to near silent at other times.

So guys, time for you all to participate in the planning and decision stage. Lets have your thoughts

Well, I'm here, obviously. :D

The GT's are still pretty great fans when it comes to radiator fans from what I know,
but according to Martin's Liquid Lab, the NB eLoops give them quite a run for their
money, especially in the lower rpm ranges (source).

Also, according to him (and this actually makes sense), in the lower rpm ranges
there really isn't that much between fans as long as they don't have annoying
bearing/motor noises or just an annoying noise quality in general.

There are quite a few fan reviews on his site if you're really interested to go through
them for alternatives I'm sure you'll find something.

If you're really planning on reusing the NZXSPC parts, then you should have some of
those very beautifully painted GT's, or not? How about using those, or are they of the
incorrect rpm version, or do you not have enough of them (apologies, I don't recall
how many of those you have)?

I'll be following this one for sure I've had my eye on the NZXT Phantom 630 to use in my 2014 project, really looking forward to what you do with it.

Yeah I've been hearing good things about them also. Think i'm most likely going to be going with the GT1450s though. Good and robust and have never let me down.

Many thanks. The 630 is a joy to work on. NZXT have made great use of screws instead of rivets in many places which makes life a lot easier.

Very interested in seeing how this goes, consider me subbed.

Appreciated, hope you enjoy.

Time for a progress update.

All ancillaries have been stripped from the case leaving just the bare metal frame.

Having not been in the workshop for over a year I gave it a bit of a tidy up. Actually Mrs Dubs gave it a bit of a tidy up as i'm not a great fan of spiders.

So many little nooks and crannies for the little Buggers to hide in.

The area through the polythene is reserved for painting. I've lined all the walls and the ceiling with polythene to help minimise dust. Not as good as a professional spray booth by any means but it does the job

This little chap was came about as a result of over enthusiastic use of expanding cavity filler used to repair a bloody great crack in the workshop wall. Mrs Dubs drew the face and he keeps me company reminding me as he does of my Darling wife.

So on with the job then...

The case as she stood this morning

6 screws and 9 rivets drilled saw the 5.25" rack come out nice and clean.

Leaving plenty of space for a huge rad up front.

And one in the roof.

Next job was to cut the plinth that lives in the base of the case as unfortunately it's just a little too high to allow the bottom of a rad to pass over it. I've left the discarded section in the photo unfiled and un-sanded.

All being well tomorrow I'll be removing the feet and the PSU mounts in order to start sanding washing and masking ready for painting. Most likely a good few days alone on prep....It's worth doing well

Thanks for looking...

G-Dubs, you a now on my hate list ! :p And why is that so, when you go in something it allways going to be EPIC all the way. And that makes going crazy in my head, i will also love to do something like this. Or will like the skills ;)

I will keep a big eye on this build :p

Not sure if it's a compliment to your wife that you compare her with the little foam man

Can already see you're going to put plenty of effort into this build though, I'm excited :)

Cheers Etlar. if you haven't already modded something, get out there and have a go. I've not got any formal, or even informal training, I've just learned by doing and cocking up quite a lot.

Nice will be following. looks promising

Thank you

There are certain similarities (if she ever reads this i'm a dead man).

Todays activity (well yesterdays and todays actually but the effect is much the same)

Prepping for painting. I've now striped absolutely everything off the case that will come off. Having previously just applied masking tape to the areas that were likely to get scuffed up while the case was in the workshop I've now properly taped the black areas that I want to stay black. I hen set about keying the case, followed by a de dust and then a wipe down, then repeat. It's well worth putting the time in here if you want a decent paint job

I can see it now... You'll get this build done in the time it will take me to mount my case feet.

Not that I mind seeing progress. Progress is good. ;)

Been lucky enough to have a few days off work which has enabled me to really crack on. I doubt the pace will stay like this for long though.

I don't believe in rushing a mod, they are to be savoured and enjoyed as they're always over too soon.....Then the itch starts again.....

Dubs....WHY!???!!

That modzart was looking boss, much better than this case....all that plastic....

I am disappoint.

+1 for that. :)

EDIT:
Quick question if I may: I just recently again went through your NZXSPC log and you mentioned something about
a bad start with the Alphacool fittings before you decided to go with Bitspower. Since Alphacool make such nice
shiny copper fittings which would fit pretty much perfectly with my build I was wondering what that bad start was,
i.e. what sort of trouble you had with them. I've had a few for a couple of months now and they seem to be doing
fine in the tests I've done, but I would be grateful for any additional info before dropping all that cash on them. Thx! :)

Liking the progress so far it's helping me loads with my current project.

Today I made the first steps on my "Project RRR" only to find all the drill batteries are flat, this will be my virginity breaker in case modding but excited all the same. Doing some Sketchup designs at the moment and waiting for the drill to charge so I can make a start ripping these cases apart so I can see what I'm left with.
