My current Lian-Li has served me well for the best part of 10 years. Ditto the FX8350 which has been in there working tirelessly for about 4 or 5 years at 4.8Ghz. Time to move on.

Budget will be around the €2000 mark spread over 5 months. My want is a TR4 platform setup but my need is probably AM4 so we will find out over the next few months whether or not head rules heart or not.

Power - The heart and soul of the system: I will start as always with what is going to power the system and I decided on a be quiet Dark Power P11 850W. But Seasonic is better or SuperFlower is better still and you can control a Corsair RXi - yeah probably but I have used be quiet Dark Power for the last 7 / 8 years in my own builds and the few that I have been persuaded to do for family and friends and they are all still running... and they are quiet, as in mouse fart in a church quiet and by in large I like to support UK / EU design where possible.

Case is next up. I have had a Lian-Li A70B for about 10 years now and it was a great case for its day but that day has moved on. I want something easy to use, big and heavy enough so that my 2 year old daughter can't knock it over and fit all the stuff I want into it - like rads, fans, fan controllers, pumps, drives and a graphic card or two. Case Labs I hear you say.. See my budget I answer, yep Caselabs are probably the Rolls Royce of cases but once they leave America their prices go nuts. Lian-Li don't have anything in their range that I like and I won't touch the Thermaltake rip offs. I ended up picking the Phanteks Enthoo Primo as successor to the Lian-Li. All black, not as well built as a Lian-Li it has to be said (in fact I get a USSR vibe to some of the fit and finish in some parts) but for a watercooler or someone who has stuff to pack into a case then the Primo has some very nice intelligent solutions.

Cooling - EK is my go to man for waterblocks since I swapped out my original Asetek many moons ago. I still have an original supreme up in the attic somewhere :) I generally plumb for the Acetal finish, I like dark and foreboding.. I have a EK Supremacy (non EVO) and I have ordered the AM4 upgrade set to cover all bases. Pumps will be DDCs but modded with the DIYHKINK Toshiba chipset which gives more power but also PWM control, these will be mounted on an EK Dual DDC V2 top which in turn has the discontinued adaptor to allow an EK Res to be fitted. My EK RES is 250mm.
I will run an EK EX240 rad at the bottom, picked because it has ports either side of the chambers, this will allow be to plumb in a drain setup easily and I have an XSPC RX360 V2 which will take over the top duties. Fans will be Noiseblocker PL2 (1400rpm) which have served me well for the last few years.

My first thought was WTF. What on earth are all these for? admittedly there are 5 fans already installed and a hub and some LED cables but I do need to strip this down completely and find out what is going on here. The hub will be useful in that I think I can power or control it from my Aquaero or perhaps even both, the Aquaero has 4 x 2.5A (30W) fan headers and I can use one of these to power the Phanteks hub which in turn can drive 6 /12 fans and use the Aquaero for PWM control also I think (I need to experiment and find out how to hook them up)

So that is where I am at the moment, I have just unboxed the Primo and PSU, cooling is sorted in my head and I have 32GB of Samsung B-die memory, a Sumsung 950Pro 500GB M.2 card and 2 x Toshiba 4TB drives. I don't know if I am doing it backwards or not in that I am sorting the power, casing, cooling first before getting that bits that will need powering and cooling but it allows me to have a good hard think about fitting and routing etc, etc.

If you go with the Crosshair you can use your old AM3 block. That should save you a few bob like. Looking forward to seeing how this works out :)

I kicked off rebuild this morning at about 11 stopping at 4 to pick up our toddler from creche at 4.

To begin it looked like this:


2700X hidden under a wraith prism rgb and a standard Vega 64 in standard config. Tidy enough considering that there is an Aquaero 6LT hidden on the reverse of the panel on the right and it is fully hooked up.

Next to throw some bits and bobs at it

About an hour later faffing about with thermal pads and I have a newly suited Vega 64


Found some rust on the chokes underneath the power supply area. Looks like the previous block was rubbing and took the paint off.

Rad Time | The EK XE240 will be on the bottom because it has 4 inlet / outlets of which 1 will be used as the drain. I have just about enough room to feed the tube through the rad mount.

I'm trying out Alphacool fittings this time round, replacing a mix of XSPC and some no name jobbies. First impressions are pretty good.


And the EK Velocity matches nicely with the Asus Prime decor.


Finally figured out pump placement. I had bought Aquacomputer's D5 bracket which is the most unusable piece of design I've come across in a long time, so ditched that and I've mounted the D5 directly to the case at a very slight angle to miss the Vega64.

Once everyone had gone to bed I had the kitchen back to myself so shifted everything back down (I had to put everything away out of sight - the little one is 2 3/4s and into everything) and was banging my head against the wall as to where to mount the pump with the Aquacomputer mount which is the weirdest thing going.

So at about 2am I had this after starting at 11 (I'm slow I know but its so relaxing pottering about putting a bit here and changing your mind and shifting it about) - Oh and the 140 fan is loose because I need to fill the res.



So pump into 240 to 360 to CPU to GPU back to RES / Pump



I had begun to fill it but it was about 2:30 when I heard the "what the hell are you doing?, do you know what time it is?" from the Mrs so I packed up

Couple of things to note, while pondering pump fitment I stole the hot swap bay from my Lian-Li and once I find the screws to mount the drives it will be staying so that is an addition. The EK Coolstream XE rad is a good little job but it does have a flaw and that flaw is the recessed G1/4 holes so either use proprietary EK fittings (I presume) or you're into that land of extenders. I suspect that is where my issue is. I am using a Alphacool 90 deg fitting without an extender and probably have not secured the seal properly on the drain pipe as mentioned yesterday.

Another little update with loads of pics. I am dumping the EK Coolstream XE 240, just don't have any trust in it anymore.

Removed from case, went straight to where I thought the leak might be and its as dry as a bone.


There is definitely a leak as shown when I started to take the fans off








My next thought was that maybe I had screwed into the rad itself attaching the fans? Nada, each was clear.

There is another blanking plate in place and on removing it, a suspiciously squashed O-ring presented itself


Put it back and gave it the sink test with a bit of Dual DDC pressure to wake it up and sure enough




Sooo what to do..
Luckily another trip to the attic and root around found me this


A fat Mayhems 240 rad :) and onwards we go. Might get some more time later to have a go and will post up.

To do list:

Spray the Lian-Li hot swap cage black and braid the wires + fit a black MOLEX connector.

Get my head around Vega and Wattman, can get it up to 1720 + 1050 and will run a bench but at 1.2 so want to pull back a little, perhaps more mem and less core + voltage.

Aura is not recognising the board so will bring the Aquaero into play for control of RGB, maybe turn blue if everything under 30c and go more Orange to red as it warms up.

Seriously tidy up the wiring

That's about it then, maybe fit another 240 rad (have an old TFC 240) in the front right hand side for giggles.
 
+ swap out Phanteks 140mm with NB versions, the noise they make while quiet is of a different hum to the NB's and so annoying me.
+ reflash Vega64 to a LC bios
+ upgrade my D5 to this, AquaComputer D5 Next , looks a nice fit for my system.

I had the same problem with the EK Coolstream. It comes with brass extenders pre fitted, but there is no way to tighten them up. The only way around it was to put a fitting in, then tighten that a crap load, then it would all seal up. But yes, a very bad design that your ports are sunk into the shell and you need extenders at all. I stopped it leaking eventually as I said, but not before it leaked.

Not being funny, but it has to be THE most poorly made part I've ever had in a PC. They look stunning when fitted and nice in pics but the build quality is awful.

I found the same with their CPU block too. It's nearly all plastic.

I won't be ditching the stuff I have, but I won't be buying any more either.

Never had a leak with any of the coolstreams. Only have them because they are the cheapest ones around. Personally I think the performance is quite poor but the dimensions suit me well and at least the Rad frame looks good. Tightening the extender can be done by a monkey wrench. Just use two pieces of rubber either side of the extender. Won't damage or scratch the framework at all.
 
So just performed a bit of shopping.

AC D5 Next pump,
3 NB Silent Pro 140 PL3s (they are overkill as they ramp up to 1700rpm but I can control that ;))
Aqua Computer also have these nifty little 4 x fan and 4 by RGB splitters called Splitty so I got a couple of those to play with.

I'm really toying with the idea of another Vega64 and a Rift.

AquaComputer stuff shipped today. Guess I missed the first batch of the D5 Next's.
In other news, my PC is going on holiday to a R&D lab my company has setup. I'll be converting from Windows to Linux for the next few months and using it as my personal POC machine for any crazy ideas I have opposite a bit of Heterogeneous computing (CPU & GPU) I am investigating at the moment. That means a couple of new Samsung 970 Pros and perhaps I might be able to sneak in a couple of 1633a SAS drives as backup :) along with whatever Broadcom LSI are touting as nice workstation type LBAs at the moment.
 
So I love it when a plan comes together...
Some arrivals today in time for the weekend

I'm a big Noiseblocker fan, good, strong quiet fans that are easy to mount, have flexible cabling and these ones are stronger than I need but that allows me to tune them to be sufficient for my needs.



The D5 Next is a tidy unit, cabling might be a challenge but it comes with an inbuilt flow sensor and lights up :) only kidding, fully compatible with my Aquaero so definetly a case of want over need.



So top is an 4x aqua bus extension to my Aquaero, allows me to plumb in the pump and other accessories I have. Middle is the Quadro 4x powered fan splitter, which I use to daisy chain the other AC splitters I have or not depending on the way I eventually run the cabling. Last is a heatsink / cover for my naked secondary M.2 drive.



These Splitty thingys have some sort of RGB capability which I won't be using, so I either hang off the Aquaero directly or via the Quadro. Basically I could probably have 50 fans in my case now and drive / control from the Aquaero, Quadro and Splitty4's with just cable splitters.



A 7 port internal USB hub which I will dedicate to AquaComputer stuff and a pressure tester with a G1/4 female connector one side and an inlet for a bicycle pump on the other side. Been reading the water cooling stickies I have Mr TTL :)



Lastly some wires to hang all the kit back together and an online temp sensor to give me some liquid temps for reference.

Ah, found your thread.
May have missed something but if you're planning to drive RGB strips off the RGB header in the Aquaero, you will probably be disappointed. It's good for a single RGB LED and it's the opposite type of LED to most strips - I can look it up if it's relevant to your build but one is common anode and the other is common cathode. You may need a farbwerk if you want to drive strips.

Mind you don't drop the DrDrop (no pun intended) as the gauge is a little flimsy and loses its zero. You can reset them but dismantling the gauge, pulling the needle off the spindle and putting it back pointing at zero. It may not read true PSI but it's the drip or lack of that you're interested in. Also, they don't seem to be completely pressure-tight....but that could be just the couple I've had.
 
So weird thing started happening, GPU would fail to initialise on restart. Then it was a case of touch and go on normal starts. I would have to switch off power supply and leave PC alone for a random period, anything from 15 mins in one case to a full day in another. Then the NIC went or the driver failed to start it... The Aquareo or the D5 Next or the Quadro would not be recognised or the Aquaero would and the other two would not and vis versa.
So I've narrowed down to either the be quiet! PSU or the Asus Prime X470 with my gut telling me its the MB. Upshot is that a new MB is on the way, a Asus ROG Crosshair Vii Hero Wi-Fi and if that starts acting up I'll swap out the be quiet for a Seasonic Prime.
It could also be something shorting out but I can't be pushed to strip everything down and test until the new board arrives. PITA but that is Murphy's law sometimes.
Upshot is that the Crosshair has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and i'm testing some Cisco AP4800s which have BLE and AC and some cool Hyperlocation tech so I have a feeling 'Cry Baby' might show up at a work conference in a couple of weeks which is good motivation to tidy up everything :)
