Project Awesome

Hi there everyone, its been a while since I built myself a rig and now the time has come. I'm no good with thinking of names so rather than leaving it blank I chose to call it ''Project Awesome'' seeing as I say awesome quite a lot :p

A few months ago I sold my gaming rig as I knew I would be building something new for the long term sometime soon and then I decided I wanted to have one rig for everything.

The theme for this build is Black/White

CASE - Fractal Arc Midi (I already owned this case from a previous storage/workstation rig)

FANS - Corsair AF & SP Quiet Editions

PSU - Corsair AX850 + White cable set

CPU - i5 3570K

CPU COOLER - Noctua NH-D14

MOTHERBOARD - Asus Sabertooth Z77

GPU - 2 x Asus GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU II

MEMORY - Corsair Vengeance Arctic White 8GB

.... Om nom nom :D

STORAGE - 4x1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 HDD's (I already owned these from the storage/workstation rig)

After a quick test of all the components I had to RMA one of the 670's due to it being D.O.A and I should have a replacement sometime this week.....

Now lets get to the current build we have here. I removed the front dust filter from the case which left it looking like this

.... It just doesn't look right does it ?

After staring at it for a while I then decided to get my dremel out and woosh away the plastic grill area and now we have this

.... A lot cleaner looking don't you think ?

The current build looks like this

I have a little To-Do list for this Project of mine

  • Add a Lamptron FC8 Fan Controller to the top drive bay (This is for aesthetics more than anything but will also be handy for fan controlling lol)

  • Add another 8GB of Corsair Vengeance Arctic White Memory

  • Add an SSD to the build

  • Get some Carbon Fibre on the floor to cover up the open holes for floor fan

  • Change the front panel Power LED from Blue to White

  • Change the front panel HDD Activity LED from Red to Purple

  • Cutsom Water Loop :D

This is the first time I've ever done anything like this so apologies if its rubbish :p

Looks good mate. No proper picture looking inside the case though! :)

What do you use the rig for?

I think the front of the case looks nice - dont spoil it with a fan controller.

Thanks dude and I knew I'd forgot to post something... lol

This rig is going to be my Gaming/workstation/storage rig, I have been considering using this for everything but storage and having a server for that but we'll see. This is the computer I'll be at most of the time anyways

The FC8 is a smart looking controller and would fit in nice with the black brushed finish it has with some white LED's. I had planned on putting the controller in the first bay and an Alphacool single bay reservoir in the bottom one (just a thought for now though)

@yassarikhan786 - Thanks dude

@Ru5ty_t00l - Cheers, it was really annoying me becuase the white accents on the fan just weren't coming through enough

The edit button is broken and I can't add the internal picture to the first post so here it is.

...

The extra PCI-E cables are just calling out to be plugged in somewhere but I put them in anyway so we're ready to rock n roll when the new 670 arrives.

Glad to see you're going with a custom water loop

If not I'm hoping you're going to be doing something with the cooler and fans. Great though they may be they ruin the look of the whole of the interior.

Black=good
white=good
Prosthetic arm beige=bad

lol, I thought the same - I replaced my noctuas with the Chrome Silverstone Air Penetrators...
Looks nicer now:

Single bay alphacool? As in the one that fits the 2 pumps?

Yip thats the one mate but its only an idea atm

@G-Dubs - I'm actually considering modifying some gentle typhoons I have here to to fit onto the cooler this evening just to get rid of the puke colour...

PapaSmurf6768's midnight smurf thread gave me the idea of painting the top of the noctua black like he has done with his hyper 212

I wouldnt want to ruin the noctua fans tbh - considering you can resell them for £15 each...
Better off just buying new ones and fitting the clips to it.

Change the idea with the res and pump though - the pumps are pretty loud and the res is badly designed and can leak

Very nice mate! very tidy and in reference to your first post no it does not look rubbish whatsoever

I'm not touching the noctua fans, was thinking about modding some typhoons for the noctua clips though cos I have a couple here

Looks like that res idea is out the window then, looks quite smart too imo. Ah well lol

@WillSK - Thank you dude

Oh hay :) Sweet build dude, painting the top of the cooler would look nice, but if you're setting up a custom loop then it might not be worth it. Wait, what am I talking about, I did the exact same thing :D
