This one will be my gaming/working rig:

Asus Maximus V gene

Core i7 3770K

Corsair Dominator 16Gb

Corsair SSD Force Series GT 240Gb

Seagate Momentus XT hybrid SSD/HDD 750Gb

Asus 6970 2Gb (old card) -> may change later on for an Asus GTX670

Corsair AX850 Gold PSU

Corsair Hydro Series H100

Corsair Obsidian Series 550D Mid-tower case

Asus VS238 LED 23" monitor

Corsair Vengeance K60 keyboard and M60 mouse

I guess that's goint to be a giant leap from the rig I am still using now (the one in my sig)

As your OS and programs (i assume, at least) shall be stored on the capacious SSD, I don't think you'd see any real advantage by going with the Seagate Momentus XT. Instead, why not a WD Caviar Green, as documents/pictures etc. don't really need to have SSD like speed to be accessed.

The Seagate Barracuda drives are also VERY good. Reasonably priced, great performance (SATA6Gb/s with 64Mb Cache). You can also just RAID 0 two of them for extra speed. Have all of your main programs and frequently used applications on the SSD, especially since its a 240gb SSD which is fairly large.

No point getting an i7 for a gaming rig, and i5 3570K is perfect. If you insist on going MATX go for an Fractal Arc Mini as a case because MATX boards in ATX cases look lost in the case, but that's just my opinion so if you think differently then fair enough. Tbh i'd recommend getting an ATX board with a mid tower case like the 550D, a Gigabyte Z77 UD5 or MSI Z77 GD55 or 65 would be my picks. 16GB of RAM is overkill for a gaming rig, 8GB's at 1600MHz (make sure it's 1.5V or less too!) is perfect. That HDD/SSD hybrid is a waste if your getting an SSD anyway. Put you, games and frequently used on the SSD and get something like a WD Caviar Green or Blue as storage.

I'm not sure i'd be happy with RAID0ing two Seagate drives...their reputation for reliability, although not quite on par with OCZ, is strewn all over the internet in the form of angry complaints. RAID0ing them just ups the chance of something going wrong by a good 100% D:

You're right the PSU is maybe overkill for the actual configuration but if I go SLI later it may be better. When I checked the PSU finder on corsair website, although there is no GTX670, if I choose 2 GTX680, the 850W is the lowest PSU recommended...

I thought of keeping my SSD for OS and software and data related to my work and use the Momentus XT for documents, pics, videos and games. Is there no benefit at all in loading speed for games with hybrid SSD/HDD?

Aaah, games there would be, yes. I merely assumed that games would be placed upon your SSD, but if your software and accompanying data is so large, I can see the merit of the Momentus XT

Yeah the data file can be up to 50Gb, although most of the time they are under 5Gb, so loading time is quite important for real time analysis and 3D. But for the very large data set I will mostly use the other rig.

So I guess I will get that Momentus XT for my games

Make sure it's locked up! Also, seriously, save yourself wasting unnecessary $$ and get the i7 3930k

haha yeah the 3960K rig will be pretty safe, gotta pass the security guard, dare to enter a biohazard restricted area and a laser class 3 restricted area

Plus I'll be sure to boobytrap the rig

Well, now i'm a lot more interested in your job than I was before. Are you a part of SHIELD? What's Tony Stark like in person?

Well the speck certainly seems to have generated some discussion.

I would agree with a lot of what has been said

so when are you starting to build this?

also, your company make you build your own work computers?

No nothing that fancy unfortunatly... Just one of those nerdy scientist in lab coat and trying to understand how our brain works

As for when i am going to start builgind the rigs, well some parts have been ordered already and should arrive in a week or so.

I did ask my work to build my own PC as the one we got from Dell, Fujitsu or HP are not the best ones...

Ok I received all the parts for this PC and will post pics shortly.
One thing though is that I finally went with the sabertooth Z77 motherboard instead of the maximus V gene (already had the sabertooth Z77 from my other project). And a full ATX board looks better in the case anyway!

Change of heart, i'll stick with the maximus V gene for this rig... After reading reviews, overcloacking seems to be better on the gene...
Will start to build the rig in a couple of hours.
