Processor upgrade? (775 - Q6600)

Hey all,

Im considering a processor upgrade - as my current really cant overclock (isnt stable/gets too hot etc etc) - party this is due to my motherboard (except when it comes to heat!) - so im considering getting something different - however im not sure 1) what i can get (what my motherboard supports) and 2) if theres much point in changing?

Thanks :)

Q6600's are supposed to be good overclockers (Eg. Nick R's sig), some people have got them to 4GHz. Like Nick said, what revision is it?

I have tbh here. If the cpu is a "G0" revision, I don`t think I`d upgrade inside the 775 socket (not unless I have money burning a hole in my pocket - even then tho I`d look to buy something else, like a newer mobo).

If it isn`t a G0, efficiency and heat-wize, selling the sucker for even a G0 or going 9450 if the mobo likes it. Don`t even know if these 9450s clock as good as the Q6600.

Basically the Q6600 is a tremendous cpu. Upgrading it is a tricky decision for me. Think they`d have to eol it to stop me recommending it.

As Rast said, the Q6600 is a fantastic chip.

THE best overclocker I have ever encountered, got mine running at a constant 4Ghz. Loving it.

Wait for the new socket before upgrading the Q6600 can not be beaten. ;)

as everyone else asked, what stepping/revision is your current Q6600?

if it is a G0, the bad clocking experience could be due to the nvidia 650 chipset on the motherboard *shrug*

i know my 680i isn't great with my quad.

the quad is in a drawer atm, i swapped it out for an e8500

If you have an Nvidia 6 series chipset then I would recommend upgrading the motherboard rather than the CPU.

yep, good advice ;)

this nvidia chipset kinda sucks, expecting a new p5q3 deluxe in the next couple of days :)

Oooo, very nice!

Never been a huge fan of Intel.. because of the lack of SLI. But since the Maximus I am in love.

I have heard goodish things about the new Nvidia chips mind you.

Yeh ive heard the 6 Series chipsets arnt that good at overclocking.

The revision is not "G0" - its a "B3"

Problem is if i was to get a new motherboard for overclocking, id also need to replace my vista (OEM)

EDIT: I have overclocked before, but because of the MB/The chipset, it needs alot of extra NB juice to be stable, and this obviously creates alot of heat with the passive cooling. Would there be any point / is it possible etc to get some sort of cooler for the NB? That would just about solve the problem i think!
