Problems with Duallies and PCMark05??

Hot off the back of the success in the Custom PC Benchmarks I wanted to push the ORB a bit harder in PCMark05.

Running at 3.1Ghz I found myself with a score of 2000 marks - it feels like I was sat in the rear tail of a certain Oceanic Flight from Austrailia to LA.

Any thoughts why it's so low - I got over 6000 with my FX so I am guessing its some sort of issue with the CPU and PCMark not talking to each other properly - am I missing a BIOS entry that should be enabled (Errata settings or similar)?

All of a sudden the Coach becomes the Trainee (YTS edition)

Top 10 Pc Mark 05

New score of 7405 in PCMark05 - Top 10.

Might be able to squeeze a few more points but seems reasonable, given I do not have a raid set-up, I think 05 prefers 2GB of ram too.

As you found out the AMD driver is needed. Bet that 2k score got you worried :p

As for your score I believe 2GB does seem to make a fair difference as I'm hitting around 7k with mine at 2.6Ghz and slower timings.

According to the ORB it's closer to 6800 than 7k :p

still 9th on ORB though - so that gap must me like a country mile in the grand scheme of things -I take on board what you say though Nick, 2GB could be better than 1 in this test.....only one way to find out I guess.

Lol, I rounded up :D

Buy some ballistix Mav and see how high you can go in pcmark, Daz got his upto 305htt I think and is still testing.

Yeah I spoke to him yesterday, its mighty impressive - but isn't there an issue with extreme cooling and memory controllers not liking high FSB at sub-zero temps?

It's not high on my priorty list so will probs have some for xmas off 'er in doors instead of Brute 33.

I'm not sure about high HTT and minus temps but Daz is on Air these days.

I thought that too, but Daz is going for a 4800 - which I would assume would be no better than a 4400 on water or air cooling (needs phase to go above 2.8Ghz)?

It's true sub zero can disable the ability to use high FSB - my FX55SD craps out at 296Mhz which is why I chose BH-5 instead of TCCD, although gollums FX57 flew at over 320Mhz.

Two seperate rigs or just swap them over from time to time?

Also how are you finding the X2 Mav (not just from a benchmarking point of view) ?

LOL I often ask myself the same thing.

Well I find that I can run 24/7 @ 3.12Ghz (260x12) @ 1.6v with the R507 Mach unit - Temps are -16degrees in BIOS sppedfan reports -22degs which drops to around -10 under load (made better contact now, it was -9 before).

Does anything run better? Not really in a noticable way, might try the new nvida drivers and see how it goes, but then it dont get worse either.

I will swap back to the FX55 for 3d benchies as nothing I have comes close to that combination - but might stick with the 4800 and see how things progress.

Either way a brilliant piece of kit will be offloaded shortly, I just have not decided which yet, but my bank is telling me to sell some assets to remain liquid and not liquidated.

Do you do any audio/video editing or photoshop etc?

Yes Nick I do and I can see where you are going with this, having just enjoyed some uber fast mpeg encoding.

I happen to enjoy both CPU's and they both deserve a place in any PC for different reasons. If you want awesome 3d performance then FX owns, GTX's are CPU limited enough and you need a lot of power to bring out the most in them or any other SLI system on any game.

If like Nick said you do heavy photoshop or heavy photo editing (not just touching up photos of granny) or a lot of encoding (and I mean a lot not just once a week) and being faster is really beneficial then duallies are the way to go.

Without turning this thread into a single vs dual core war - Simply put:

3d benchmarks and Games = FX55 SD

CPC and PCMark Benchmarks = Duallie

It's gonna stay like that for at least a year - by which time new sockets, new dual core technologies and new graphics will be out - Not really a massive argument to change until that time unless you work on photos and encoding everyday and wish it was faster.

The other thing is that these X2 CPU's can multitask and all the other stuff - unfortunately women are the only other such product that can do more than one thing at once
