Heya.
This isn't about a new build and it can't be. Basically I have a friend who is not confident at all in building his own PC. He has very large banana like fingers and is very clumsy. Sadly he is in London and I am 100 miles away, so spending £40+ to go and do it for him isn't really an option.
I've tried to convince him otherwise, and I even managed to spec him up a self build Alienware Area 51 ALX for £930*. Even though he loves Alienware (he has one now that he got for peanuts two years ago) he still wasn't confident.
His budget is a flat £1000. Right now I have done all I can to see what he can get, and after reading a group test in Custom PC we have concluded that the Yoyotech 570k Warbird is about as good as he is going to get, but we're all ears
The warbird consists of -
PC CASE - FT03 CASE
POWER SUPPLY - 550W PSU (Antec or Corsair)
MOTHERBOARD - INTEL P67 CHIPSET MOTHERBOARD (B3 Revision) (Asus IIRC)
PROCESSOR - CORE i5-2500K - QUAD CORE - SANDYBRIDGE
OVERCLOCKED - YES - 4.6Ghz
CPU COOLER - CONTAC 29 CPU COOLER
MEMORY ONE - 4GB DDR3 - 1600Mhz MEMORY
MEMORY TWO - NONE - UPGRADE OPTION
SOLID STATE DRIVE - NONE - UPGRADE OPTIONS
HARD DRIVE - 2TB SATAII
OPTICAL DRIVER - DVD REWRITER
GRAPHICS CARD ONE - GEFORCE GTX 570 - 1280MB GRAPHICS
GRAPHICS MODE - SINGLE CARD
SOUND - 5.1 CHANNEL
OPERATING SYSTEM - WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM Pre Installed (Licence Only)
In benchmarks due to all of the other systems either using a 560 ti or 6970 it hit home runs across the board.
We then found out that Scan do a similar (pretty much the same) system with pretty much the same identical specs for £1050. That he is happy with, just incase the Yoyo can not be stocked soon (it's showing OOS ATM).
So does any one have any other ideas?
* The system we had in mind was.
Area 51 ALX chassis with X58 Alienware motherboard and daughterboard. Lighting, LCLC, 1200w 80+ silver PSU.
I7 950.
6gb Corsair 1600mhz ram.
Samsung F3 1tb.
Sony Optiarc DVDRW
Zotac Amp ! GTX 470.
And anything I may have forgotten to finish it. It was all there though, a complete desktop. Now before the Alienware haters chime in let me give you some facts.
The area 51 ALX is a behemoth and will be cooler than the tiny FT03.
It has more room for upgrades and a triple SLI X58 board, with unlocked overclocking options.
A monstrous PSU.
It wouldn't be quite as fast as the Warbird, but would still be immensely quick.
Most importantly, though, it would hold its value more than any other desktop on the market. I don't want to argue over that. I've seen crap base entry Alienwares fetch £700 on fleabay with an 1156 I3 and Radeon 5670. The Area 51 ALX starts at about £1800.
