PowerColor RX 480 Red Devil Review

Thanks for the review, been waiting for this to land here :)

It's still my fave card.

BTW for those wondering about the logo it's intentional. Satan followers apparently write upside down or something.

It ws a mistake, I know know theyve changed it on the new ones

Hi, your results seem worse than in other reviews. Are you sure you didn't run your test with the Silent BIOS? I don't have my card yet so I'm not positive which is which, but in your picture the BIOS switch is on the left, while in many other pictures it's on the right.

Hmm. I think that's more because every reviewer has complained about it :D

I remember some one asked them and they explained it was deliberate. However, customer is always right and all that stuff :)

I've decided to avoid the RX series now. I wanted to play with Linux or something and the 950 I bought was far more compatible. Plus hey, it was only £30.

No dude, we double checked and even got a new BIOS actually. The silent mode was considerably less.

Low performance is all due to lack of power to keep the card quiet.

I heard they were having bios issues in a couple of other reviews. Shame really.

I think I would take the slight drop in clocks for the size and look of this card though.

I deffo tested in the OC mode (1330MHz)

Its the Average that lets this down not the peak.

It gets hot well quick too.

All right then, thanks for your reply. Certain others reviews did have better results, though.

You cant really compare one review to another one with a different testing methodology.

Ive splurged out my thoughts pretty well in the review though, its not as good as Ive hoped and Ive spoken to Powercolor about it and when they start saying things like "we aimed for silence over speed" that is all I really need to know that its not as good as it could have or should have been.

Well, yes and no. I respect the principle, but when the setup is

  • CPU fast enough never to be a bottleneck
  • same GPU
  • same drivers
  • same game settings
  • same resolution
I would expect the results to be not identical to the decimal bits, but close. I any case, I didn't mean to criticise your review or its methods. I just thought it might happen to leave a switch you're playing with in the wrong position. :)

While a respectable choice in absolute terms, aiming for silence over speed seems in direct collision with their marketing, aestethics and... everything else, really. :D
In any case, I managed to place an order at a really good price, using 80% free store credit, so you won't hear me complain anyway. ;)

Im surprised too tbh. I cant comment why others may have got better results.

All I know is Ive done all I possibly can bar making changes to the powerimit to get the best from this one.

I personally think its a bit confused and its all down to the cooler not being that good.

I wouldn't sweat it man. Polaris is totally and utterly a silicon lottery. It literally comes down to each specific core on each card as to how well they will perform.

Im seeing more of it down to BIOS tbh. The scores have been relatively consistant and its only how much power they decide to feed it seems to make the difference

I'm I wrong in saying that if a company is flagshipping a product, shouldn't they bin their chips better?

Define flagship on a budget focused GPU dude?

Most of the GPU manus have made posh versions of it but you can't polish a turd, as they say*

*OK so I am aware that you can actually polish a turd, they did so on Mythbusters.
I'm not saying the RX 480 is a turd but it's no Titan XP.

The cooler may not be the best, but with those three fans they should be able to keep temperatures under control, right? Of course, if they decide to underuse them... I just don't get that aiming for silence thing when you already have a Silence/Speed BIOS switch.

Flagshipping, as meant by "look how great and wonderful this card is and how cool it's subsequently named". But still I thought graphics cards shouldn't suffer from the lottery, as specs should be what is written on the box or at least as good or better than reference? But I'm a mere Nvidian and know not of the wildling ways of AMDness.

Aye, when all we had to go on when AMD announced the 480 was a rather poor show and tell and their over use of AotS for comparisons... we were expecting big things and to be fair it's rather a let down, I was anticipating great performance and competition but again they just seem to be slipping down the results tables.

The only thing that remains true for team Red right now is that they still have the best bang for buck hardware. Roll on Zen.

The fans are not let loose to keep it quiet. They make a hell of a racket if you set them free.

The cooler may be long but its design is actually pretty basic
