Hi Guys!

Bought a faulty "powercolor pcs+ 6970" off ebay pretty cheap @£90 it's problem is it starts and works until the drivers are installed then it just gets to the windows welcome screen and goes blank.

I see there have been several issues with certain drivers.

I have a few fixes I have in mind:

1) heat paste might be not transferring heat (reapply).

2) might need washers to get extra pressure from heatsink to gpu (overheating possibly)

3) wrong BIOS was flashed on to it so it goes mental(flash with proper bios)

4) capacitor needs changing (new capacitor)

5) possible bad joints(reflow)

6) driver issue as it supposedly works without installation(hope it is this one)?

I don't get it till next week, anyone encountered similar problems and what did you do to resolve it?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

That's the same guy (simple010) I bought a Antec HCP 850w from last week for £80, it's faulty as well

sending it back next week for a refund.

He did say in the description that the 6970 was faulty and it hangs at the welcome screen, no idea about a fix though. I check Google for fixes but found non but found a few people with the same prob who RMA'd their card because they couldn't find a fix either. I was going to buy it myself but seen as there was no fix to be found I didn't bother.

I sent him an email saying the PSU was faulty and that I wanted a refund and he was really apologetic and said he would give me a full refund when I sent it back.

first he said to me it wasnt faulty, then he said he would refund me half of it and i can keep the card, then he didnt reply then i opened a case and then i got a ebay message explaining that i was a lying piece of shit that deserves to be shot and that if i didnt close the case he would make sure it happened

Yea that's him loool!

I just hope my technical knowledge is better and I come out charlie sheen winning!

I see that certain drivers did this to 6970's I hope they were only using the disc and it had the shit drivers(unlikely). He had sold it to someone previously for full price so who knows?

OK so it starts up and displays nothing with driver, works without I am chancing my arm for a RMA but powercolor seem to suck monkey nutz.

I did notice that it is the PCS+ that Tim reviewed, do any other 6970's share this cooler or is it unique to that model.

The reason I asked is that it is on a 880mhz clock and not 940 and I am wondering does anyone have one that they could send me the 940 bios.(perhaps the voltages are different?)

AH i also see there is an ATI Tool driver in device manager ...is this normal for a 6970??? haven't seen it before my frinds use ATI tray tools aright ...perhaps your man was f'in with bios?

I did a reflow and managed to get it with no artifacts at the BIOS splash screen and booting into windows with driver installed but with 128-bit bus and no memory reading on GPU Z still manged to play a game CODMW2 at decent rates but way off the mark.

Ok noticed the middle connection on a chip with 3 pins is broken on the back and repairable it is large enough not sure what it is!

It is the second chip from the lower right GPU screw hole:

You might be able to fix it with a bit of solder and a soldering iron, might as well give it a try

Well it will be worth a go 6970 for £90 FTW i might have to pay by electronics mate a visit as the actual piece that comes from the chip is missing except for a stub and it may have a specific value.

He loves to wield his heat gun and soldering iron on shiny things!

I'm beginning to wish I had bought it now

I had my mouse hovering over the commit to buy button for a good 10mins.

Let us know if you get it working.

ONTOPIC

If it works under windows generic drivers it might be salvageable, tbh i dont know enough about these things to give input but i hope you come off the winner
smile.gif

EDIT

Ok so after i calmed down i read the rest of the posts and all i can say is LOL, if that works dude grtz on a sexy card for a crazy cheap price
smile.gif

I am getting a heat gun to put a concentrated burst of heat to the GPU only and i have it for sale so no loss was worth a go!
