Possible upgrading

Well, I know for a fact that I'm going to be getting a new power supply (few days ago my computer randomly restarted twice when at 3 ghz, so I'm guessing it's that my power supply couldn't handle the load with a higher vcore) [OCZ Powerstream 520W non-SLI http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...e=M&Product_Code=100117&Category_Code=Rebates (trading for an Ultra-D, so no real need for SLI and SLI is about $30 more)].

Now though, I'm tempted to upgrade my computer (will have to somehow manage it without my dad's knowledge. Should be interesting to see if I can pull this off. I have the maybe of a friend ordering for me).

Now for RAM, I'm going to get an OCZ kit. Is there any difference between the Platinum and the Titanium besides the higher voltage warranty on the Titanium? The difference in price is only about $5 so should I get the Titanium?

Platinum: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...e=M&Product_Code=140226&Category_Code=Rebates

Titanium: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...e=M&Product_Code=140533&Category_Code=Rebates

Also, I want a 7800GT. Would it be better to go with an XFX one or the EVGA CO SE?

XFX: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...e=M&Product_Code=190339&Category_Code=Rebates

EVGA CO SE: http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...e=M&Product_Code=190290&Category_Code=Rebates

Opinions greatly appreciated. I really hope I can pull this off  :D :p

Well firstly good luck with your mission :D

As for ram platinum and titanium. Titanium uses Infineon chips on these (HYB25D512800BE-5) and rated at 2-3-2-5 , at default it will show 2.5-3-2-5 but can be changed to rated values at no problem however it does not do 2-2-2-5 despite increasing the voltage. These modules i believe targets servers for low latency and not overclocking as few sites reports them as not good overclocker. Infact it doesnt go beyond 220mhz despite relaxing the timings etc. So i recommend you dont choose this at all :D

Why dont go with these should be better i think and cost lower.

I hear good speeds and stable runs from Crucial Ballistix as few uses them on our forums , might wanna wait for their input on memorys.

As for video cards I am sure you know you can overclock your card and get the same results as those products which are overclocked by the company itself. Unless they use extreme cooling and very high quality mem chips which in this case i believe XFX and eVGA are both quality companies and dont use extreme cooling and if you dont want VIVO then you should go with XFX and save $60 if thats not important go with eVGA saves you the hassle to overclock the system and you ll have VIVO. Bear in mind you wont have much headroom to overclock eVGA anything further , maybe 10-15 mhz.

Good luck.

Agreed with Tec on this one. Those Gold OCZ are great chips

Also you may want to take a look at PQI memory as it really is great vfm and clocks hella well. If you could afford it I'd deffo say Crucial Ballistix PC4000 :D

As for the video card I would say a nice XFX 7800GT would be a great card and overclock very well due to the fact that XFX have the very first pick of nvidia's chips: meaning that they can "cherry pick" and thats why XFX clocks the highest out-of-the factory of any OEM nvidia card manufactorer.

As for PSU I'd go with:

or

Well, I had pretty much figured on getting the XFX, considering it is $20 cheaper and is only 10mhz slower. Just needed assurance.

And as for that RAM kemp, in my case that would actually be more expensive than the OCZ (don't forget rebates ;) ) since I live in CA and Newegg is based is CA, thus, sales tax. This isn't the case with Monarch.

And as for the PSU, again, I'm going for an Ultra-D so SLI isn't needed (yes I know you can mod the earlier versions for SLI, though apparently the new ones have some epoxy or something blocking this mod. you would have to drill something and that's dangerous) and, considering I'm a student of 15, I don't think I'll be able to afford SLI in the near future. The only real difference between those Powerstreams is SLI, right?

For the RAM, which would you suggest, the gold or the platinum? They pretty much have the exact same price after rebates, so it all depends on potential.

Also, what do you guys think of the new Gamer Gold XTC (http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...e=M&Product_Code=140535&Category_Code=Rebates)?

And also, just for the heck of it, what's your opinion on this Mushkin stuff (http://www.monarchcomputer.com/Merc...e=M&Product_Code=140762&Category_Code=Rebates)?

Edit: I just noticed that the Powerstreams only have 2 SATA connectors and I kind of have 4 SATA HDD's. What's my best option?

Again, opinions greatly appreciated.

Platinum R2 models are very high clockable but in your case this platinum is not R2 model so i assume Gold VX model will be better. I am using 3200 OCZ Gold VX 2 x 512mb at ddr500 with 2-2-2-5-1T commands. I am sure 2 x 1024 will have less timings but still it should be better then normal platinum model you have there.

As for P.S.U i always recommend TAGAN 2 Force 480W power supplies as i probably bought about 30+ for pcs i ve build and no problems at all. They do come with 4 SATA connectors , ATX/BTX , SLI , Xeon ready and costs 52 GBP , i couldnt find one in monarch thou.

More information on Tagan > Click Here

Otherwise you would need to buy molex to SATA power converters.

If I have to, I'm somewhat willing to order from Newegg for the better selection, but again, there is the tax issue and, as I will have to get someone else to order for me, I don't want to burden them with ordering from 2 places. Anyways, at Newegg, seems these 2 are fairly well liked too....:

<shrugs> Again, I would rather order from Monarch.

Edit (didn't want to double post again despite several different topics): Well, I've been looking around and EVGA's have been getting some decent clocks, ranging from 470-500+ <shrugs> Also, supposedly EVGA's warranty supports overclocking <shrugs> I dunno, probably still got with the XFX to save money <shrugs> Still want opinions...

Well, this looks like a no-go for now... My friend doesn't think there's enough time to convince his dad to order the stuff since the rebates end the 31st. Looks like I'll have to wait for the next round of rebates and hope for good stuff... Will ask again once they're up... :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Good stuff WC

i don't relli know PSU's... so w/e

mem.. get the gold ones.. they sound kool

ok heres the read advise.. i think u should get a 7800 gtx instead of the 7800gt.. reason? because it pwnes..

u have a 6800 gt right now.. and if u oc it fully.. it should match the speeds of a stock(non-OCed) 7800gt.. so y bother wasting another 300 on a card that is just a 10-20 fps improvement on games?

but if u get a 7800 gtx.. that would be a big improvement from what i heard..

as for budget wise... WC i know u personally.. and i know u got enough for all that stuff x.X

well good luck with ur upgrades :)

p.s. if i were u.. i would be pretty scaried if my dad finds out xD

I definately agree on the front of getting a GTX over the GT... The GT's performance increase doesn't justify the cost if you already have a 6800GT.

If you're looking to go with a single card setup, I think that your best bet right now is to pick up one of the newer ATI cards. With the release of the x1900's you'll be able to start finding the X1800's for less and less. The performance is great and image quality is far superior than any nVidia card at the moment.

Well, right now I'm thinking bout getting a x1900xt, though prolly wait till release of the G71 and possibly the G80 just so prices will drop more.
