Phone upgrade

If you were strongly considering the Nexus 5 then you really should be looking at the LG G2. Two of my friends have Nexus's and I have the G2, they are more or less the same physical size. Having the buttons on the back is much better and if you use one for a bit you will wonder why all phones don't do it, similarly the tap to unlock feature is the nuts. The only other outstanding difference is the battery in the G2 is absolutely killer. Mine always lasts for 40+ hours (general use everything on) sometimes it gets close to 60 and even if you rape it then it still lasts well and seems to do noticeably better than the Nexus. Also screen/bezel is lush.

I am actually a HTC fanboy with a hatred of anything Samsung. When I smashed my HTC One X+ I couldn't afford a HTC One and didn't want to get it right before the M8 came out. TBH now the M8's specs are out I can say I definitely won't be switching from my G2 although I really miss the HTC build quality.

The G2 is interesting, but it doesn't have a memory expansion slot, also 5.2" is too large. The nexus 5 is stretching the size limit quite a lot for me already.
The G2 has better specs than the nexus 5 though. Too bad it has no expansion slot. The only thing it is missing is the wireless charging other than that.
Ehhh.. I'd have to get the 32GB version to make it worth my while and then i could just get the Z1 compact instead.

Blackberry are the market leaders for expensive paperweights. I've had more issues at my work with BBs then all the other phones put together.

Honestly I think the issue here is you want android. Never got the hype with android but then again I've never really been tempted by having a phone that is easy to dick around with.
I know nokia are going to release some android phones soon and if they're anything like their windows phones they will be amazing. Well the top of the range ones will be. The current specs for the first ones coming, the x series, aren't amazeballs.

I read a couple of times that the Windows Phones are very good, but i've tried the OS and i don't like it at all.

So those that are against BB, honest question, no trolling. Which devices are you referring to. Hardware leagues behind? Again how? QNX is probably without a doubt the most efficient OS out able to run any Android app without sideloading now and not the complicated to port over? So which specific device have you used?

Just look at the spec sheet, the z10 has a 1.5GHz dual core and it's still as expensive as a moto g. The battery seems to not last very long either.

Doesn't matter what the OS is if the phone itself can't actually turn on ;)

I think it's 0.6mm bigger, I mean that's not a big deal. If the G2 is too big and I can see why it might be if you were extremely small handed or a woman then you wouldn't want the Nexus 5 either. Neither has expandable storage but the G2 has 50% more battery life.

If you have legitimate reason to discard the G2 then discard the Nexus as well or if your thinking of getting a Nexus then consider paying a little more for a wedge battery that's all i'm trying to add here. I understand why they both might not meet your needs.

Why can't we go back to the 90's/early 2000's when Nokia 3210 and 3310 were the rage and everyone played Snake and composing their own ringtones. I even modded my 3210 with a little motor so it vibrated.

I actually have extremely large hands, the Steelseries Rival barely fits my hand. I just don't want a large phone in my pocket. I don't get the benefit of having something like a note 3.
The main reason for dropping both the Nexus 5 and the G2 is that i'd have to get the 32GB version, which is 450 euros and for 440 euros i can get the Z1 compact, which has the same specs as the G2 besides the smaller size and therefore lower resolution, but also a memory expansion slot.

Spec sheet is a marketing sheet and that is it. You can't compare specs between OS' The Galaxy devices and android products need more processor power to run their inefficient systems. There is so much unnecessary crap running on android devices they run slower and slower as time goes on. My phone goes on at 5:30am and off around 10:30pm and I will typically have 60%+/- battery life left. This is why I ask, no one says what phone they have used because they haven't used on, they are just repeating what others have said on forums who haven't used the phone either. I have a dozen friends who use Z10's and no one has any problems with their phones and all have great battery life. Spec means nothing. I have put my phone up against people with a 5s and it embarrass' that phone and against an S4 and it couldn't stand up either. And that is personal use not second hand info from someone who has never touched the phone.

You have to remember that phones are a personal thing though. I personally have an HTC 8x with WP8 and I love it. It's fast enough for my needs, fits 50 music albums easily and offers me Office 365...

But it's not for everyone, cause not everyone will use their phone for music, school/work and a couple of social media apps. Some people want games, others want to take fancy pictures and different phones and Operating Systems are good at different things. :)

Oh, and mind if I asked how exactly you compared your phone to the others and how it 'emberassed' them, cause I'm pretty curious.

Yet it looses to the Nokia Lumia in Battery. Oh and costs alot more than the same spec Lumia 920. GG. This is why RIM will die. They're not cool anymore and iPhone now has all the business contracts. Also people do expect phones to last more than six months.

My real experience of blackberry is as follows. I work in a helpdesk in which we get asked all sorts of problems, mainly for advice from students before they pay alot for a specialist to get it looked at. Blackberrys almost allways have hardware issues. You'd think we'd get alot more iPhone issues (we don't, mainly because they actually last) as it is a much more popular product. Android is in second place as android is becoming more common and most cheaper android phones are poorly made.

-edit- I've got a suggestion for OP. A Lenovo P780, I'm sure you can get 4.4 on it.

Sounds like a legit statement.

There is only one way to solve this argument and that is clearly a benchmark, would someone with a blackberry care to download 3dmark, run Ice Storm Unlimited and inform me if you get over 14'732

I worked on a game for Blackberry (Z10 and Playbook) and I'll never put myself through that again.

Yes, I agree it is very personal. My wife is currently looking at new phones. She can pretty much get whatever she wants and it will work for her. She texts, email and occasional browser and very few phone calls and thats it. Most phones out now are very good, I just get panties in a bunch when people discount BB devices without even trying them. My statement on embarrassing them is based on doing tasks on the different phones and who can get it done easier and faster. I won't even get started on iPhone spell correct and typing which is easily the worst on the planet. Im not going to bring up Blackberry security and being unhackable because that defense has been beaten to death. I would just like people to try it before they berate it and not having used it. that is all.

The battery is the highlight of that phone, which i value, but 4GB internal + 32GB max for the expansion slot isn't very great. The moto G would probably be the easier choice if i'd go for something like that.
That brushed aluminium though, i don't know why so many manufacturers rely on plastic. It would go along perfectly with my Lenovo laptop.

Nobody in this thread has said anything negative about BB without a proper reason. Barnsley gets lots of broken blackberries and SPS did some programming on it. I got to test a bunch of blackberries as well, the platform is just too restricted for me and the price isn't right either.

Good night my sweet prince. It's time for my good ol' Nokia xpressmusic 5800 to go. Since it started running out of memory when just opening a web browser i suppose it is time for me to upgrade.
I am not really in touch with the portable side of things, i never used my phone for much more than texting, music and googling.
Even though i am not really the type who needs it, i won't cheap out on my next phone. It's also supposed to last for a good while, so once in 4-5 years i can spend a bit more.
I'll just write down a list of priorities:
Rather small size (4" - 4.5")
Wireless charging
FTP support (i guess every android phone can do that)
Android 4.4
Quad Core CPU (no idea why they put these things into phones, but it's supposed to last)
Memory extension slot
Shouldn't be out of juice after 4 hours
720p/1080p display
Up to 450 euros

So far i've been looking at the most popular contenders, i.e. the Nexus 5 and the Moto G, but neither of those have a memory extension slot, 16GB or even 32GB are quickly filled. Also i think the Moto G is pretty ugly. They are both rather large, but from what i've heard the size of the Nexus 5 is still acceptable.
Today i found the Sony Xperia Z1 compact, it pretty much has the same specs as the Nexus 5, but it has a lower res screen because it is considerably smaller. It also has a memory extension slot.
I am in no hurry to upgrade, so i am open to a lot of suggestions, the only thing that isn't on the table is a different OS, i found Windows Phone to be pretty annoying and apple is disgusting.

What do you find annoying about WP?
I've been all over lately, had a iphone 5s for about 3 months and got rid of it. Before that it was a Lumia 920, before that a galaxy note. Currently i'm rockin' a 1020 and it's a fantastic phone. I would suggest a icon or 1520 for you. Also, the build quality on Nokia phones, as everyone knows, is untouchable. These damn things are almost bullet proof :D

They do an orange and black one. It looks like a child of my yoga pro. Apparently the build quality is fantastic on these phones. Only issue is getting hold of them. And the storage.

It's hard to explain what i don't like about it, but mainly i don't find the huge tiles to be useful. I prefer small icons and sub menus. I'll have a look at the nokia phones you suggested though.

The Icon is basically a nexus 5 but it's not available in germany.
The 1520 is 6", that's just stupidly large.
/edit 2
I am pretty sure the Icon is the 930 in ger/EU. It will release in June though. It's also in the same league as the Nexus 5.

Lenovo, they know how to build proper mobile devices. Too bad they don't make a version which fits my needs.

Shame :l. I don't know about you but my lenovo laptop is fantastic so I'd think the phones would be of the same vein. They've got a windowsphone one coming out this summer and I might pick one up if its decent.

I love my Lenovo laptop, far better than the HP one i had before.
I can't believe the Z1 compact has no real competitors.

I've never had a lenovo/IBM laptop die on me or my family. They've always out lived their operating systems. fantastic build quality and excellent design(although I've never tried their truely budget laptops). The cooling is always sufficient as well, which seems to be a rarity with windows laptops.

Buying a new phone is alot harder than it should be these days :l. Especially if you think about it/don't just go get an iPhone.

Oh please barnsley, i am not a sucker.
I'd rather stick to my current phone than getting an iphone.

Somebody explain to me what the appeal is of a 6" smartphone which doesn't even last a day without a recharge and doesn't fit in any pocket.
The people in my class bring their charging cables to school. It's absurd.
