Phase change a MUST for high San Diego overclocks...

I've just been doing some reading on a few other forums trying to see how high other people were getting their Diego's. It turns out that on air or water you won't see anything above 2.9ghz at the very max with some pretty serious volts.

Everyone that's been phasing their chips don't seem to be having any problems hitting 3.3ghz with them though which is a nice overclock!

Basically I'm writing this for anyone contemplating Diego or Venice core and aren't going to be using an extreme cooling method. Pound for pound the Venice is the only way to go if you're not going to get some crazy cooling going on. The 1mb L2 isnt even noticable and for $200-300 more than Venices, completely not worth it.

My advice is stick with a Venice 3200-3500 if you're looking for a good air/water overclocker. If you're going to be cascading the chip you're trying to decide on definately hit up the Diego, I guess it thrives on the low temps and increased voltage.

Have a nice day :)

See XMS...still a good investment as you'll be getting an LS soon!!

Hmm...maybe I'll be looking at the new 754 mobile chips that are gonna come out then! :)

Hmm....Thats a bummer. Maybe the article i saw the other day with a 3700 Diego on air at 3.03ghz was just very lucky....

VERY lucky... Everyone over at XS is struggling big time w/ their Diego oc's on air/water.

shit 1 fraggy well u wont have that long to wait for phase change

I'm gonna save up for a few months so that when it comes time to purchase I will still have cash left for bills, etc.

Wait a minute...did I just hear a sensible statement from Frag?

Mine will be an X2 next year I expect, that's if I don't grab a Turion in the meantime! :D

I agree w/ PSU... I've been carefully monitoring the problem patterns and it definately seems like a voltage control issue. I've sent an email to Fortron with my disgust of their products.

kempez, if you want to overclock, turion is NOT the way to go... sry man, they just don't get very far. you will wanna try a newark 3700

TBH mate I'm not gonna buy one anyway I just like the thought of having a cool (temperture wise) mobile proc with 1mb L2!

I'm probs gonna be saving for an x2 system or a 1205 systemnext year :)
