People Using Virgin 20MB XL Package - In here

Nope, sorry.. but it best be better than my Motorola SB5100. Been using that since atleast 2002.

Anyone think there will be a realistic speed gain if I get a newer modem?

I'm also using that modem and still get full speed so it's unlikely. I think this is aimed at the people on the really old ones.

What speed are you getting at the moment? Download and upload?

I get 2.3mbps down and 90kbps up. The upload is swag.

2.4mbps down from rapidshare offpeak, around 1.8 peak time. 768ish up all the time really, ping isn't fantastic though, 50-60ms

the old modems were proper crappy, new ones aren't fantastic either, you get what you pay for with virgin and....well..... theyre free

also, any virgin adsl customers on here who have not recieved anything since the old thompson devices you can swindle a nice new DG834G v5 out of us ;)

So you can safely say my upload is crap?

Did this kinda thing off my own back over the phone with them a while back.

Thought it be tricky for the old 3com to handle the comms, plus it was only something like 64bit encryptable.

Quick Tip:

If you guys do get a new modem, it should work find when it's connected directly to your computer, but it didn't work through my Linksys Wireless Modem (4 Port Switch) straight off.

Here are the steps I used (it may differ with the type of Router/Modem you have):

1. Plug your computer directly into the cable modem.

2. Use "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig /renew" from the windows command prompt to get a new IP address from the cable modem.

3. Unplug your computer from the cable modem.

4. Plug your computer into the router, leaving the router unplugged from the cable modem.

5. Use ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew to get an IP address from the router.

6. Enter the router's configuration with your web browser.

7. Tell the router to Clone your Mac Address. wait a few seconds.

8. Plug the router into the cable modem.

9. In the web interface, tell the router to ask for a new IP address from the cable modem. (This is the "DHCP Renew" Button) The cable modem should think that you are the PC that just spoke with it and will let your router work again. You might have to ask it to renew a couple times.

Mine came via UPS earlier, not sure on brand or model but here's some pictures. Haven't managed to get it working, will try Bloomerz's steps in a minute

Hi Dude. I recieved the exact same modem, was tricky to get working.

If you can't do the MAC Clone, some people suggest just unplugging it for about an hour and plugging it back in through the router. It should learn the routers MAC and work.

Edit: It's an Ambit 256

I got a Ambit 255/Ambit 256 (Virgin Media branded) off them.

and it didn't stop them from axing my connection in half after 1 downloaded film ... !!!***!!!! lol

you dont need to leave it out 1/2 hour.

Unplug router and modem. Plug modem in wait 30 seconds , plug router in and you sorted.

The default page on it is 192.168.100.1 to access the admin page on it. ill not say much more than that ... Its tftp based and docsis 2 based as well ..

All so dont forget to get it working in the first place you'll need to contact Virgin and let them know the mac address. it will take up to 2 hours for them to switch you across providing there systems are working . When virgin send them out there random and they dont know what you mac address of the new modem will be.
