Penryn Socket 771 Server Processors to Launch November 11th.

Little exciting prospect for any1 who, I don`t know, expecting to buy stuff w/c 19.11.07 ;)

Any sensible explainations as to why 771 & 775 exist ?

Socket 771 mobo's are dual processor...

Socket 775 single processor...

That isn't really an explination, but that is all you are getting.

quick someone who knows more say something!

lmao

Well the real reason is so u can`t put the one processor in the other`s socket.

But I don`t understand why they`d pursue 2 lines instead of just one.

they always have with server grade cpu's, both amd and intel. Again, not an answer as to why, but an answer anyway :p

hehe we could make a thread just on plausible explainations as to why, outside of "we don`t want home users buying these" or "to generate more money".

Socket 940/AM2 ?

I believe that server chips are often binned higher so that they will presumably be more reliable. This is often confirmed by server chips overclocking better than regular CPUs.

Why dont we just buy server processors then? Dual processors on the same board, and they're usually cheaper.

Somebody tell me why, please.

cause that costs a friggin bomb and isn't worth the effort.

Server software is set up to use massive SMP systems, gaming/casual software is not...in general

Pricing probably, the norm is to charge higher prices for stuff companies will buy cos u can get away with it.

Was looking at dual socketed 939 ATX boards the other month cos they were cheaper than u`d expect.

EDIT: Kemp would u have an opportunity to have a Tyan/Foxconn/Supermicro board in just as a one-off test ?
