PC not booting...

Hi folks :).

I have a bit problem here, my main PC refusing to boot in Windows :(.

OK all in order. 1st of all I don't have a spare time at the moment to check it properly so I just hoping that you could maybe point me in right direction for later...

2 days ago my brother was on PC and he states that everything was working fine and there wasn't any noticeable glitches going on or anything and Tuesday night he shut it down as normal and all seamed to be OK.

Yesterday I tried to boot it up but all I was getting was screen saying that Windows couldn't start and I had to choose from all these options "Start Windows normally", "Last known good configuration", "Safe mode", etc... As I had USB keyboard connected I couldn't choose any of options as it's not working at this point and I just left it to count down time and reboot... Several times but nothing and it just kept coming back to this screen... As I was very busy I just switched it off and left as it is...

Today I connected up my PS2 keyboard and tried to get it to boot by trying several options but it just refuses to boot in Windows and keeps going round and round, I couldn't even get it to boot by choosing Safe Mode...

Any ideas where I should start???

Cheers

What's the spec - is it overclocked at all?

What was your bro doing on the computer?

I have always found the RAM to be an evil cause for these kind of things; although I can't really see any reason why it'd start malfunctioning randomly??!

The GPU could be the cause as it switches to 3D volts/ mode at about this point. However, I couldn't say for sure without prodding it - someone else on here may have already experienced the same prob so might be able to provide some better help :)

Chip was overclocked for 600MHz (can't remember volts), RAM was on divider and was running on stock, graphics card was on stock as well, I think 8).

Bro was just surfing web and shut down PC as per normal.

So far cleared CMOS (to get absolute stock) but no luck.

I will investigate more detailed over the weekend but to be perfectly honest I don't have a clue where to start...

What version of Windows is it, XP? There are some alternative safe mode options, safe mode with command prompt - that could work, doubt it but worth a shot. If its blue screening then the error condition will help - it should give a reason or note which file/service it is having issues with.

Cheers

Hi

This is my first post - im a IT admin and see this all the time..

Few things id try are unplug the PC from the wall and leave for 10-20 mins (sounds daft but often works)

When you say it goes round and round what do you mean? Does it reboot? Or just hang and you need to reset. If it reboots try going into your bios and just leave it in there and keep a eye on it for a hour (settin up next to a TV or working PC helps) If it doesnt reboot may not be hardware and a software issue. Another way to test that would be to try booting from a linux live cd (eg ubuntu) If it does reboot then I would place my bets more on the hardware side but does depend on a few things...

My money would be on a hard drive problem as they wear out after so many hours use, see at least one a week go at work - does it make any strange rattles, noises, or been slow recently? (not always a clear way to tell but often some signs)

If it starts to load in safemode does it stop on a certain file? If so then your problem lies with that file (mup.sys is bitch for this)

im on msn if you want to have a chat andrew__hey@hotmail.com (two _ in the middle )

Good luck Andy

Damn I missed your post max0 :$.

To be perfectly honest I haven’t had a chance to get around to have a look at it so far but thanks for your input as I’m finding your information quite useful :).

I’ll report back later.
