PC cuts power suddenly then reboots

Hi guys

As in the title, my PC occasionally cuts power suddenly then restarts. I keep trying to find the fault by stressing it under heavy loads but the fault is inconsistent. I've run Battlefield on Ultra, BitCoined for hours etc but cannot repeat it so I can trace the fault.

I suspect it is the PSU which is a OCZ ZS750W

My Rig is as follows:

  • Asus P979
  • i7 3930x
  • 16gb Ram
  • RocketRaid 2720 Raid card
  • 7 x 2TB Western Digital HDDs in RAID 5
  • GTX 580
  • OCZ 120GB SSD

I'm pretty sure 750W is more than capable of handling this rig but I'm not sure.

Do you think the PSU is at fault? Should I get a more powerful PSU or is something else?

Many thanks.

It is OCZ....

750W should be enough for what you're powering, but the most likely cause will be the PSU. How long have you had the PSU and how long has this problem been going on?

run a prime95 torture test (in place large ffts) with hwmonitor open side by side and see if your pc crashes, that's a way to test your psu. ocz psus aren't popular round here and aren't regarded as good tbh, in that rig i would use a seasonic / be quiet / corsair / mushkin or nzxt psu.

another way to test would be to remove components and rebuild the system bit by bit then stressing using method above untill it starts doing the same thing. or just borrowing a known good psu to test machine.

hope this helps

I'm running Prime now.

Incidently, I have also heard of OCZ's bad rep regarding PSUs but I couldn't find out why. Can you clarify? I bought mine after reading Amazon reviews.

Hi Yass, this issue has been going on for over 6 months now. I've had the PSU for over close to 18 months I believe.

Can power ripples cause the PC power cut?

Yes ripples can cause the power to cut. If the voltage goes too far from its specified value the computer will turn its self off to protect its self.

Is there a choice of PCIE cables from the PSU? If so, swap to the others and try then. If not, your PSU is borked.
