P5B-D - PC won't restart after bad overclock!

I've found the P5B to be good at handling settings. Even whacking the fsb to 600mhz and the pci-e up to 110mhz hasnt caused me any problems (well apart form it needing a bios reset).

I'd say that you just got a duff board - but deffo see if you can borrow some components froma friend or PC shop before going thru the grief of an RMA.

I'll check the ram and gfx card in my old dears pc (the one i'm using now) If they work then is it defo the mobo? I was just arranging with dabs the pickup - this was before I knew about ST btw

it may not work, but try removing the cpu for a few mins. it may make the bios reset and give you the F1 message at startup *crosses fingers*

Yeah good idea Pyro - deffo worth a shot.

If u do rma, is it a good idea to not volunteer information that u been oc`ing `n stuff ? Or are manufacturers a bit more grown up about it these days ?

Ras - I'm not going to advertise the fact I was OC'n but the mobo is designed to do it... I was thinking about the mobo last night and forgot it was a bit of a dud from the start - out of the box it had a cpu load error, then the on board sound died recently (buying a sound card fixed the problem) then this - the pci-e and usbs dying...

Mr. Smith,

Did you ever figure out the problem with your pc? The posts just came to a dead stop, no resolution...

My first foray into overclocking was with my ASUS A8N32-SLI, had to pull the CMOS battery so many times I decided to make an SPDT switch to replace the clear CMOS jumper on all my current and future pc's  . One day it took a real bad dump, had to pull battery and then move the jumper for 30 seconds, and to top it off copy the original BIOS to a CD and reinstall (floppy wouldn't work for some odd reason). The joys of overclocking...:D

Anywho, let us all know if you figured out the problem, or if it's just a defective mobo/ other component.

TJS - I tried numerous solutions. Nothing worked. In the end I bought the abit aw9d-max and it is a gem! Clocks like a beauty!

I have to RMA the p5b-d - better get it in the post this weekend!!! I'll let you know the outcome - I was quoted 4-6 weeks hence the purchase of a new mobo

Sorry to hear about the P5B, but look at it as a gift in disguise...:D You have a MAX now, which should net you some really good overclocking! I found a beta, BIOS 13, on ABIT's website forum, gimme a sec...

http://forum.abit-usa.com/showthread.php?t=114150

It adds the tRFC (<I think that's what it is, tRef, whatever...)(I'm on my work pc, 'slow crap' is too good for describing it) to the BIOS RAM section, on the bottom, which helped me get past the 400FSB barrier; but like I posted elsewhere in OC3D, it's a setting that takes a lot of patience. Too high and all the FSB-jacking won't mean squat, too low and your pc won't start up (refer to the advice given before on resetting your BIOS). I use 30 as my tRFC.

I'll give you a short example: at 390FSB*9ExtClk=3.51GHz,RAM@533MHz(1:1)w/tRFC28(I believe that's the default), my 3dmark06 score was 9469 (or 9649, listed as FTASM-Interceptor)...

With a tRFC of 38 and a clock speed of 3.6GHz (400FSB*9), my 3dmark06 score would end up being about 20 points less! When I backed down to 30 tRFC, my scores would finally take advantage of the higher clock speed.

Good luck with the new board, dude...!

Ye the trfc loosens the timings on the refresh rate of how long the info is stored in memroy. If it's low then it keeps more info in it, if you raise it too high the memory can lose information and have to go fetch it again (I think) which takes more time.

what you need to do is turn the pc off, change the Jumper settings. Then press the power button, then turn the pc and change the jumper setting back and thats it your PC should be back and running with its defualt BOIS settings.

Jumper settings and location can normally be found near the CMOS battery, just look at your mobo manual for its location and configuration.

After what seems like an age Dabs have refunded £130 to me for this faulty mobo! 8800 seems soooooooooooooo tempting right now... Shame about xmas. Anyway, case closed!

8800 ftw :D:D:D

Bad Ham! I'm so weak, i'll crack.

Thing is I only just got a new misses last week, xmas is coming, that means me parting with copious amounts of £££.

Although... Technically, this £130 is already spent, meaning a 8800gtx of the inno3d variety would cost £270 (£400-£130), if I sell my few week old 7900gto for £150 (or whatever they go for) then really, if you think about it, I'd only be parting with £120ish - 8800gtx for £120 is a bargain. I think you just convinced me Ham lol.

I know when ati drop something in Jan/Feb prices will drop. As much as it pains me I'll wait. I see quad core and dx10 for the new year :D

Edit: Not you too Kemp. Peer pressure, I'm telling my mum lol

GTS ftw tbh. Price:Performance and it overclocks to better than the GTX.

and get the XFX from our own fragster and youve got the 2nd most powerful card around, a warrenty for it (XFX double liftime ftw) and all for £304 or somthing.

Aye, gts looks good atm - all comparisons have been on dx9 platform though. I reckon we haven't even seen what the gtx can do yet, oc'd gts vs stock gtx dx10 - wonder if the gts will hold its own then.

The $2 £1 is fast approaching - Better see what Frag is saying!
