OverKILL3D ASUS Matrix Platinum GTX980 4 Way SLI Review

i dont understand the extreme differences between websites with the same gfx cards 2xsli. like one site will say hitman absolution running at 75fps and you clocked 31fps at 4k. then the same site will have bioshock running at 67fps while you clocked 103fps at 4k. those are huge differences where you have a faster processor. the other site being a 3960.

We run our games maxed out - you can only compare like for like - as in our tests with our other tests.

Sweet, well Overkill3D. I bet Valley and Hitman looked awesome in 4k. Did you do any Tri-SLI testing at all? I know it still wouldn't be sensible or practical on air but was just curious if it would alleviate some of the problems on the driver/coding side of things.

Didnt do any 3 way no dude - this was only for fun really

Haha :D It did look fun and the AX1500i came in handy again, still I bet it was surprisingly low draw compared with the 295X2's ...just looking back to that Overkill3D the 980's smashed the 295X2's, that's pretty epic on air.

Tom I bow to your EPeeN!

Man that is a true Overkill system! It would be one of the only systems to need a huge Caselabs case and overkill water cooled setup. I am amazed at your generosity and wish you a most happy birthday.

Take care -- Rick

I wish EK made blocks for these.

I really REALLY wish EK made blocks for these. :(

One thing you forgot to mention (or I'm guessing test) was the F@H performance. Four of these cards plus an 8-core will be knocking out around 1.3 MILLION (yes, million) PPD. Not bad for a single rig considering that there are TEAMS in the top 100 that don't manage that.

Tom, just curious to know how smooth or choppy these games were when you ran them? I don't have any personal experience running 4-way SLI but by many accounts it works wonders on smoothness and frame pacing. FPS numbers don't tell the whole story.

Bet you needed the aircon on with that, I remember when I did GTX 480 SLI it was like I was being cooked in an oven.

Still quieter than the 6990 ever was ;)

Those benchmarks make me so jelly. I wish I could have that power at my disposal.

It is nice but for gaming it is just as much fun gaming on one card as it is on all four.

With a 5960X and Quad 980s all overclocked the max power draw is about 1200 watts.

TTL, if you can manage to do the same for 4x Titan X I would be ever so grateful, those cards are beastly on their own, I would love to see them in a 4-Way SLi setup. I am very curious to see if they can manage to do 4k Gaming at 120fps. ^_^

Great review by the way. :)

If the overkill conclusion is anything to go by the out come with Titan X's are going to be pretty much the same.

Like TTL explains in the vid 2 cards are the sweet spot, 4 cards just creates more problems than it solves. Would be nice to see the Firestrike 4K score though, but again is £4000 really worth it just for that.
