hi all. i am going to try and keep this short and sweet. i have been put in charge of building a new rig for a clan memeber. he has £3000 to spend max. it will only be used for gaming (not even web browsing) i have to get him everything but a mouse and keyboard. i have put together and idea but i would like to run it past oc3d first. i am fully aware that it willo be very overkil for his needs but he wants to have the biggest e-peen in the clan. so here goes

Intel Core i7-3930K C2 Stepping

£442.74

h100 cpu cooler

ASUS Rampage IV Extreme Intel X79

£319.99

Corsair Vengeance 16Gb DDR3 1866 (4x4G)

£111.50

EVGA GeForce GTX 680 Graphics x2

£863.24

Corsair HX Series 1050W Modular

£154.50

120GB OCZ Vertex 3 Series SATA3 SSD 2.5In

£88.74

Samsung SyncMaster S27A550H

£330.67

i am not sure on what case to buy so suggestions are very welcome.

now you have read the spec. i am going to say it again. i am fully aware that it is overkill but that is what he wants. my question is, is there anything you would change, perhaps things i have missed and your general thoughts on the rig.

thank you for your time.

ps. this is not a dream build thread. this rig WILL be build with in the next month

You could swap the two GTX680's for GTX670's and aim for a Corsair AX1200 PSU. GTX 670 has (almost) the same or even better performance than the GTX680

heh i finished my rig a couple of weeks ago, drop one 680 and added a monitor... mine came to £2,700 with tuner protection windows etc etc, all he would need is a keyboard and mouse.

CM STORM TROOPER CASE IS AMAZING. I bought one and have NO complaints.

also the 670 is cheaper and is a VERY close 2nd to the 680 sometimes benchmark show it beats the 680 but price/performance the 670 is great

the gtx 670's are better than the 680's? (confused)

Yes, sometimes. The GTX670 is just an (slightly) underclocked GTX680. But the drivers are more efficient on the GTX670 (At the moment). With battlefield 3 you should be able to achieve an average of 95~100fps on 1920x1080 with GTX670 SLI

ok how about 2 x EVGA GTX 670 2GB

will the CM STORM TROOPER provide enough cooling for the 2 cards

forgot to add i will be using a h100 for cpu cooling

So your gonna put a 3930K and a Rampage IV Extreme in a gaming rig. Oh god no... Thank god you posted this here.

CPU: Intel I5 3570K

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14, Havik 140, or a Corsair H100 if he's gonna give the CPU a very high OC

Mobo: MSI Z77 GD55 or GD65

GPU: 2 x Nvidia GTX 670 2GB in SLI (or 4GB for multiple screens). Something like the Asus non-reference card is a good choice

RAM: 8GB (or 16GB if he really needs it - doubtful) Corsair Vengeance LP 1600MHz or 1866MHz (or something similar. Make sure it will fit under the heatsink if you go with air cooling)

PSU: Silverstone Strider Evolution 750W Fully Modular 80 Plus Gold Rated Unit

SSD: SanDisk Extreme is amazing value, Samsung 830, Kingston HyperX 3K, OCZ Vertex 4, Corsair Force GT etc... Maybe even a 240GB for his OS and all his games?

HDD: WD Caviar Green for random files, or a Caviar Blue or Black if you so wish

Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi, or something like a Corsair 600T if he wants a window (or stick with the Arc if he could mod a window if he wanted to)

^ That's a huge amount of money saved. You don't need a 3930K for gaming, an i5 3570K is completely perfect. 2 x 670's is a smarter choice than 680's. If you could afford to, ditch that 1920x1080 monitor and get something like a Dell Ultrasharp U2711 which is 2560x1440.

Did you read the built is for the maximum out of the budget and the future woner just wants the sickest rig money can buy? It's not about saving mony I am pretty sure it's about spending every penny possible to create a bawler machine.

you see?

I think it will and the monitor is a bit on the small side get a 2560*something monitor ^^

i did say at the outset that i am fully aware that it is overkill. but thank you i will think about it

That's not the point. £3000 is a stupid amount of money to spend on what is JUST a gaming rig, no point whatsoever. You could save a HUGE amount of money and still have a rig with near identical performance in games for so much less money. And the build i posted will last as long as the original 2011 rig the OP posted.

i do understand you point PetrolHead247

let me put it this way. he wants a ferrari. you could say well you are only every going to drive it to the shops and back so why not get a ford focus. do you see what i mean? btw i am not trying to sound rude and i am sorry if it come across that way

People just don't realize that when it comes to gaming rigs, you don't need to spend all that money. You wouldn't notice the difference from the £3000 build and the one PetrolHead247 posted apart from in benchmarks, but you don't play benchmarks, you play games.

If you want to spend all that money though, then fair enough, it's yours to spend.

That spec will work fine - although you might want to get 4gb gpus for multiple screens and 2500 resolution. Clearly if he wants over the top then he should also watercool his gpus and import a caselabs case.

Epeens - these things really hack me off. It's easy to waste all your money (or his in this case) - you just pick the most expensive parts and you can't really go wrong. Why not get a 500gb SSD and heck the 2011 socket has 40 pcie3 lanes so go for quad 4gb gtx680s just to spend more.

Truth is that money won't get him everywhere. Half the people on these forums can buy a pc for £1200 (a 3570k platform with 2 7950s or 670s) - overclock both and have more performance than this 3930k build with 2x680s for half the cost (who has the biggest epeen now? Not that I care about these things lol)

There have been a number of threads like this recently and these forums take them quite negatively! There's just no skill involved in builds like this. My next post will be more positive - I always have to get it off my chest with these posts before I become useful.

Master&puppet please understand i am with you on this and PetrolHead247 i have tried to explain this to him but this is his treat to himself.

You don't sound rude at all, it's fine
biggrin.png

But that whole Ferrari thing is completely different. There is a HUGE difference between a Ferrari and a Ford Focus. The Ferrari is wayyyyyy faster, better looking, sounds amazing etc... and therefore there is a massive increase in performance from a Ford to a Ferrari. However, there is pretty much NO difference at all between a 3930K "gaming rig" and a 3570K gaming rig

good point i didn't think of it like that.

It's not aimed at you - it's just that we have very little to say about these builds other than "yes it will switch on". There is no clever decision to be made. He may want a ferrari but the people on these forums would pick a Nissan GTR anyday. If it is a status thing then he can congratulate himself on spending his money - that doesn't mean anything here lol.

I guess it is ignorance - that's harsh - I mean a lack of education towards components which annoys us and is where we try and help (with out trying to sound too arrogant). Have you seen how many "gaming builds" (highlight the quotes for sarcasm) which are made using i7s and a mid range gpu? They are endless...try spotting one which has a mid range cpu and top of the range gpu - they are rare but this is the way to build a gaming pc. The market is saturated by companies which sell the wrong kit to people and people fall hook line and sinker for it:

"OMG 8 core AMD must be faster than 6 core Intel 3930k"

The challenge is in building a top notch pc for the least amount of dosh. There is a thread here asking for a £700 gaming build - now that is a challenge and interesting. This is just...I don't have the words..meh?

I'll tell you what - pass me his email address I'll make an ZOMG111!!!!1!!!!! pc for £10,000 he won't regret it.

I don't know if its just me but I would say that getting the same performance as a £3000 system from a £1000-1500 system gives you a bigger "epeen" then being stupid and wasting loads of money that could be used for, education, car etc

By the best of the best based on the socket 1155 and in terms of graphics go directly to the GTX 690 because someday he can upgrade and by another one.The rest of the list i think it´s fine! Except the OCZ ssd drive, choose a corsair or a mushkin......!
