Overclocking and warranties

Yes yes, those two apparently dont go along very well heh, but what exactly is the limit on overclocking in order for the warranty to be considered voided?

I read somewhere back that ocz (possibly only certain modules), had a decently high limit on the voltage before it would void the warranty, I dont remember where it was that I read that =/

What is the limit that processors (specificly A64 X2 3800+) and memory modules (ocz plat rev. 2) allow for without voiding the warranty?

OCZ Plat Rev2 originally had a max warrantyable voltage of 2.9v which then got dropped to 2.8v during the course of production. OCZ has some of the best overvolt warranties on the market. All of their sticks have different max voltages due to the different IC's used on the sticks.

As far as processors, technically any sort of overclocking / overvolting voids the warranty. Luckily there's no real way to tell if it's been done unless u plainly blew up / melted the chip due to too many volts.

so say i screw over my 4400 but it wasnt running at a high voltage it would be near impossible to tell in that sense?

well technically insufficient cooling could melt a chip too.

but lying to a company and saying you didn't void a warranty when you did is fraudulent!

Well i melted one of my graphics card before, It was a Sapphire X800 Pro and they still covered me on warranty but i had to pay £25 RMA as it was a OEM.

That's ok because their weren't any hardware modifiactions done to the card. If u had an aftermarket heatsink on it or something they'd have dropped ur warranty like a bowl of magma.

I got a thermalright SI-120 for it with a thermaltake A2018 120mm blue led fan on top so I doubt cooling will be a problem

I think my opteron 146 may be dying

I keep getting BSOD's with machine_check_exception error. It seems to be at random times but is getting more frequent. Weird thing is I ran prime95 all last night and it was still going this morning, I stopped it then started browsing/checking mail and I got BSOD.

I was thinking it was my PSU as I my 500w thermaltake died last weekend and I have put in my spare 420w Tagan while waiting on a RMA. I have had the problem from around this time.

I have just popped in a spare opteron 146 and so far no problems so im thinking its the cpu Im wondering if I can RMA this chip even though its been running at up to 2.95Ghz ?

As long as it's still under warranty, etc you should be able to get it swapped out.
