Overclocking 3770k on Msi z77 Mpower

Damn, that's a shame, hopefully they can figure out what's going on and fix it. In the meantime, I tried using the second XMP profile at 2133, and still it hates Sleep Mode; can anyone link to a beginner guide to overclocking RAM? I want to try downclocking to 1866, but I'll have to do it manually(there are only 2400, 2133, and 1333 available by default in the BIOS) and I've never gone anywhere near RAM OC'ing before.

all the kits ive had run 1866 at the same settings as 2133 and run fine /wake from sleep etc at those settings just try setting where it says dram speed set it to 1866mhz and leave the timing at auto and the voltage will set itself too but you can set it manually if you want and try that it should work fine.

if you're trying to get the tightest possible timings at 1866mhz then i dont know about that but i dont know if timings matter much with ivy bridge ( i dont think they do )

I've never really understood CAS timings frankly, other than a vague impression that "lower is better" I'll give your suggestion a bash, I doubt leaving them at CL11 as opposed to CL9 will make that much of a difference to my system's performance.

As With both Ivy and Sandy the memory speed grants more performance increase than lower timings, although the performance difference between fast RAM and "slow" RAM is pretty microscopic anyway and can really only be seen when running benchmarks.

Well it turns out I didn't have a horrifically bad chip, I just had too little thermal paste on the CPU. I reseated my cooler and now I am getting good clock speeds at much, much lower temperatures.

I apologize for my own stupidity here! I know I've been going on forever about how I got a terribly bad chip etc etc.

How did you apply the paste, in the center or spread it?
I thought your temps looked high , what overclock did you get on your chip?

this time i did a bit in the center, now the temps are around 75-77'c at 4.6 ghz before i couldn't even get to 4.6 ghz. before i wanted to spread it really thin so we put very little and spread it very thin but it turned out to be too little.

Way to go, can't belive it was the thermal paste. I guess a little more of it doesn't hurt. I think those heatsink manufacturers that sends them with pre-applied paste know what they are doing, cause some people complain about it being too much and they whipe it off, oh well I use it and it is very good.

So... going for 4.8GHz soon ?

i got rid of the pre applied corsair thermal paste and my temps dropped immediately... running my 3770k @ 4.6ghz and my temps are all in the mid 50's...
i could run it on 4.8ghz but the temps will go into the 70's. 5.0ghz that's when the temps go skyrocket... mid 80's

They go mid 80's only when you stress test, right? Well if I were you I'd keep the 5.0GHz OC because no apps could ever match a true max heat stress test, right?

5ghz is nice looking on paper for sure but the reality is that almost no applications even come close to using all the power that something like a 3770k has on tap even at stock clocks, with the exception of stuff like cinema 4d and things like that.

most modern games use about 25% of the 3770k at stock clock speeds, for example.

Yeah , thought so. The 3770k is a pretty powerful CPU, another successful generation from Intel. A CPU reaching 5GHz with those temps is a very good CPU I believe.

it's definitely a good cpu.

what i would say is if you're rendering or encoding for long stretches then sure go for as high as you can get but otherwise it's not really needed if you're just doing normal stuff.

Alright, But at the same time it doesn't bother you either. In the situation where the applications you are running aren't even close to demanding... an OC like that wouldn't hurt. But I guess we are looking at this from different points of view. I need an overclock because I need it and you are doing it just cause you want to see how far it goes although the stock power it provides you it is more than enough for every game/app you are running.
