Overclockers.co.uk

So I've been ordering my PC parts and have found that overclockers.co.uk is more expensive, so I emailed them explaining that they are more expensive and was wondering if I could get a discount code.

Now some may see this as WTF Meng, you think they will give up free codes? yeh fair enough, it's just my thought process is that if I go to any high street shop and order or buy £2k worth of goods I'd expect a chunky discount.

So looks like I am moving to Aria although another disappointment as their website does not support VAT free website automation check-outs. Everytime I want to order something I have to phone them. I guess that is the trade off of the two companies.

Rant over, nevertheless I would still recommend OCUK but they have lost my customs.

Sorry dude but that's not how it works.

I'd literally love you to show me a shop where you can go in and order a pc and get a discount.

This kind of bartering just doesn't happen anymore, harping on a shop and saying they don't give discount so bye bye is a bit, well.. unfair. Prices are prices these days.

Have you tried Scan? I use those quite a lot for any of the main components and I find they're very well priced, and dabs are good for things like peripherals

Margins are pretty tight on PC parts. You might have spent £2k on parts, but they didn't make near that. It's all about the volume of parts they sell.

Nearly everything OCUK sell is more expensive than any other company in england, I did ask an OcuK employee about this when I visited their new premises "Why is your store more expensive than practically every other in the UK for computer components ?" and the only answer I got was

Which translates to, Because we can get away with it and no one does anything about it.

OcuK, In my experience, Good customer service, Stupidly upmarked prices.

They don't do what you want them to therefore they're bad?

They are more expensive than most, i'll give you that though.

I do understand where you're coming from with the whole spend £2k and for them to appreciate your custom enough to offer you discounts.
But as SuB said, the whole 'Thank you for your business' doesn't mean as much these days.

I wouldn't hold anything against them for this - and I think a forum thread on them not giving you a discount is a little far...

However, if you'd have gone about it differently and said: 'Look, this is what these products cost here, and this is what they cost at Aria, will you match their prices please?' then I think you'd have stood a better chance. Companies refusing to match prices, especially on £2k orders isn't really right IMO - and in them saying no, it's basically them saying no to the custom, which is stupid really.

Generally however, Overclockers do tend to be more expensive than elsewhere. They tend to have high prices overall, then flood the site with weekly deals to make you think you're getting a good deal - I've seen things under the 'latest products' section on the front page (so only showing the 5 most recent products they've added to the store) that have already been 'reduced'. It's the whole DFS never ending deals at Overclockers IMO. Products on offer so often that the offer price actually is the proper price.

I don't really shop there tbh. Not because I've got that much against them - I can work round everything I've just said and price compare Scan, Aria, and CCL (sometimes Ebuyer) easily enough, and if OCUK are cheaper I have nothing against buying from them... They do often have things that other retailers don't, like the KFA2 ranges of graphics cards, and now the massive range of Bitfenix stuff with braided voltage reducers and now all the various colours and window panels for the Prodigy. But, I have free shipping at all the other retailers, so it makes little sense to buy something from OCUK over Aria unless it's cheaper even with shipping added on.

The only complaint I really have with Aria is with the free shipping offer that we get on here. It's obviously great that we get it, but if say you make your £2000 order from them, and just one of those products is on super special, then our free shipping doesn't apply. I understand that they can't do it on smaller orders as the free shipping then doesn't cover their costs, but 1 item on offer shouldn't really nullify the free shipping I don't think.

Whatever the case, their shipping even if you do have to pay is far more reasonable than OCUK who only offer one or two shipping methods for large orders, and both are over £10.

Didn't really call them bad, like I explained in my post but I forgive you. :)

James, that's the exact thing I did, I added together identical parts on Aria take away OCUK total and emailed them that figure which is around 40 quid and they didn't like it one bit. Fair enough as other people have said that mark ups on goods within this specific area is tight but not as tight as you'd think if Aria can go round selling some parts 20 quid cheaper. Not even counting my last 5 year of ordering bits adding up to at least another 3/4k.

I shopped there because of VAT matters and I'd be able to check out easily, never really minded ordering small parts here and there and didn't take much notice until now, 2k was excluding VAT so 2.5k nearly, not that it matters. Other alternative might just be Amazon, VAT feature on there and prices seem competitive.

One of the 2 places you named will give discount if approached in the correct way and they are not already the cheapest, trust me I know.

Just going with Dabs, 20 quid off every purchase over 200 quid. Called the support line to get my VAT-free account set up and it was complete hassle free so I will most likely be using Dabs from now on or Aria if I am bothered to do telephone orders.

I used OCUK for a long time, and whilst they were more expensive than other places I found at the time of using them that the service you got from them was excellent.

I then started to find that the service I was receiving was going down in standards after, they moved locations from the old office in a warehouse type building to a full on proper warehouse with office space, all to themselves as if they were getting to big for there own boots.

I had issues to the point I no longer can use them, but sometimes if I could use them I would because they do sell stuff occasionally that I cannot get from somewhere else, but that is on rare occasions as every company deserves a 2nd or 3rd chance.

When I did use them though, I always went to the store rather than ordering online because I hate waiting for a delivery van to turn up, and as I can drive and it's not to far for me I just went and picked everything up.

All I did was walk in with a list of what I wanted to buy, and generally if it was under £500 I wouldn't even think of asking for a discount, however if it was over then normally I would and to be honest most of the times I was given maybe £10 to £20 off something, or given something for free and it was nice of them to do that, as it felt to me that I actually mattered to them even though really I didn't, they just wanted me to keep shopping there.

Now sometimes I could spend upwards of £5000 in one go and generally that was when I had been asked, to build a few pc's by people and at that time even asking for a small discount would get me nothing but a look from the staff as if I was scum, and I just laughed it off and said there was no harm in trying.

I now only use Scan and I probably get a discount 99% of the times I go there, generally because I deal with the same person over and over again and because I am always polite, but I never have to ask for a discount the guy just gives me a discount if he can, and I don't expect it so I always if I receive a discount drop some money in any of the charity tubs if they have any, as a way of saying thank you.

When I worked for Comet nearly every customer wanting to buy a tv always asked for discount and generally they didn't get, one when they came to me because they were just flat out rude about it or they were just asking for to much, however if someone was polite and asked for a small discount then I would do my best to get them a discount, but sometimes my manager would say no and I use to feel really bad about it.

I got a mystery shopper come in the store one day, and the store was rammed full there was only 3 of us on the shop floor and because we were rushing to deal with, every customer mistakes were made and I remember being given a really poor review by the mystery shopper for not, giving a discount and it really annoyed me because someone expected me to give them something knowing that, what they bought was not only already knocked down in price but came with a free stand and dvd player.

I think to do what you have done here, because they didn't give you a discount is rather rude and obnoxious and just because you expected something does not mean that, because you didn't get it that, that company is poor or bad it just means that they obviously feel that they shouldn't have to give a discount code out.

Yes there is no harm in trying to get a discount, and I recommend people always try to get a discount if they can but what I don't like is when someone says that because, they didn't get what they wanted they are not going to use that company again.

Sorry if that seems harsh and rude but, to be honest if everyone who was purchasing items from somewhere had a attitude like yours, then there would be very good companies going bust all the time.

Yeh, you may be right but I was fuming. I love the way the person on the support team just types to me a one liner and doesn't put any effort into it. Fair enough if they really tried to do anything or if it is actual company policy then fine but I was only expecting a very little discount tbh, they were doing 7.5% on everything like a month ago but back then I wasn't building so had no intentions to buy anything. I guess I am too naive to think if they can give 7.5% for a few days on everything that they must be able to give a small time customer ordering an average sized cart something in return but I was wrong.

So you should receive discount when others don't?

Or everyone should receive discount, forcing OcUK to put up prices to pay for the discount in the first place?

To brand a store for being expensive is silly because if your buying from only one place i'm sorry but there is no way your getting anything for cheap anyways...

I shop for my parts at every major pc part store i trust and i save a tenner here and fifty there which always mean i can get more bang for my buck

With OCUK they are expensive but the often stock things no one else does and if you go on their forums and talk to people often you can get very good customer service and they saved my ass once with their finance options

Typically if you shop in a store buying high value item/s you tend to get some sort of discount of complimentary items but I guess computing isn't or will never be at that stage. My mistake.

yeah man it's really not like that, not even in most shops for anything in the UK tbh ?

Not many if any places give 'cash' discounts anymore. just isn't done that way these days :(

i bought a crappy laptop from currys for the rents to use and had a little technobanter with the salesbro and he threw in a laptop bag. twas awful nice. another time i stood around looking for someone for ages. the place was empty. found the store manager and asked for some help. he told me he was busy and he would get someone else to help. that sucked. and ocuk arent the most expensive on everything. i got a whack of bitspower fittings for way cheaper than specialtech. few other bits and bobs. i think its maybe the things that they know people will want they bump the price a bit more.

Yeh I guess it's normal that people buy 2k worth of goods and don't get anything off nowadays, times are hard I guess. Still I would use OC for the parts that are exclusive tbh, they are good in that sense and have good customer service.
