Overclocked 7870 vs 7950

Only the Tahiti LE 7870 comes close to the 7950. We have reviewed both so try hitting the front page of the site first eh ;)

I'm sure at a certain oc the 7870 can equal close to or exceed the 7950. but then again you can oc the 7950 as well so it'll overtake the 7870. Its kinda silly to think in those terms. IMHO just buy the single fastest card you can afford and go from there.

i had both a 7950 DCII and a 7870 hawk, with a heavy overclock the hawk was nearly as good as the 7950 on stock.

Nice reviews. I am wondering though Tom, are you considering doing reviews on the 1440p resolution also in the near future? I know majority use 1080p. But would be nice to see, though I appreciate it if the answer is no, as it nearly doubles the work load of a review I am guessing.

Well that is why I wanted to know what the difference between the max oc of both were. I don't see the point in comparing the max oc of one card to the stock of another :p

I am thinking go for a 7870 now and wait until the new cards come out end of the year, or potentially earlier if nvidia release something (doubt it).

I have been wanting to jump over to the green side for a while, but nvidia make that impossible with their pricing in my opinion. Hope that changes with the 700 series.

The GTX 660 can be had for a decent price now and is pretty good.

Nvidia cards cost what they do for a reason, and it's mostly down to support and driver support. It's clear when you use either card who puts in the most work. Some of it however is a bit unfair (like paying for 3D and Physx etc if you don't use them)

Only on the bigger cards & we have already started. Yet again.... all on the front page.

lol. I only checked out the two you cards mentioned. Should have looked at the newer reviews before asking I guess

I better check out the front page before asking my next question, otherwise your next thought/response maybe: this guy... :D

Honestly basing a purchase decision on what OVERCLOCKED performance is may well leave you feeling a bit let down since you're not really guaranteed to be able to overclock for beans... OR... it could go smooth as silk and you found a diamond in the rough. You never know, so I would look at it like: what is your total budget for a card, and what is the best performance value for the dollar at STOCK you can afford... then go and try overclocking from there :-)
