Over Moderation On Forums Getting Too Much

^^Paid subscriptions to services/sites that should be free to use is always a bad idea. I would openly donate to a service I enjoy using, but I would hate to pay a subscription to unlock certain "perks." This often leads to a segregated community where the "standard" members are treated like s**t.

This guy was a trader on the site so in pc terms it would be something like corsair paying to have a section for their products on here and some advertising. They would be moderators of their section too.

The thing is, some level of moderation is required, otherwise it would be complete anarchy. It's also a bit of a thankless job, often done for free or kudos.

True but when your involved with a good community like this one I imagine it to be quite rewarding as your helping to keep the place sort of clean but still adult'ish ^_^

Ah ok. Essentially a "King of the hill" section where the mods/paid members can do whatever the hell they want.

On that forum yeah but on others I have been on with the same setup it works fine. It allows traders to advertise and do deals. Deal with customers queries rather fast and easily and it generates revenue for the forum to keep it running.

Its great if the forum admins keep an eye on it but if they don't the trader can give the whole forum a bad name.

Yeah, not all forums using that system will be the same. The only issue is that you need moderators for moderators and that is a rabbit hole nobody wants to go down :p

Before I start ranting I just thought I'd say this has zero to do with anyone from OC3D, Nothing but respect for our Mods/Guv here :)

I've noticed over the past year or so that mods on forums, PC Enthusiast forums in general, Seem to have gotten a bit power mad when it comes to moderating.

I've seen a lot of people just having a mature adult discussion were all involved contribute something to the discussion only to have the whole thing cut short or off completely by an over zealous moderator because he, She or more likely "It" doesn't share the same view point.

Or even worse, Posts edited so it falls more in line with the moderators "Standards" which seem to be sub-human.

For instance me a and few friends were chatting about bodybuilding, Supplements, Products etc... and because the moderator of that forum didn't like the direction of the discussion he/she/it closed the thread and even went as far as to ban someone.

Personally I'm getting really sick and tired of certain mods and it's only really on PC enthusiast forums where they are at their absolute most despicable.

Anyone else think it's time that some mods need to BTFO and let adults be adults ?

I too have experienced this on forums.

I used to pay a monthly subscription to a legitimate forum based file sharing website, and over the years the rules came in thick and fast. it got to a point where i stopped paying, and stopped commenting. As far as the mods discretion thing, I say - Its nice to be important but important to be nice x

Shamen reference!

Anyways sometimes it can be hard to be nice all of the time. Especially when its the 999999999th time youve had to try and be nice about the same subject.

The moderation on this forum is lenient. I was an active member of a game mod forum (based in germany and the folks there had a long ass list of rules and a rule 1 which was the mod is always right)
We had two admins that were nice guys generally and controlled the mods pretty well. Then those two guys were forced to retire so the main admin went hitler mode and the supermods were unleashed. Community got ruined....

Thanksfully, much like Remmy, I've never been part of any other forum properly, there will be the odd forum I join to ask 1 question or have a discussion once but that's about it.

I see the way a mod should be on the perfect forum as an active poster who has been a member of the community for years and knows the ins and outs of the forum edicate. I also think that the mods should be people that actually talk to you and tell you if something is wrong with your post, but other than that is just another, albeit well regarded, forum member. I see OC3D as basically this, the mods have been here years and are real people who interact with the community in the same way that they have for years and aren't looking for power but are looking for the better of the overall forum.

This forum is really nice compared to others. One great thing to see is Tom posting on a daily basis. Another tech forum I belong, you might see the owner make a post every three months. I love the participation around here. The only rule that I get caught up in is don't bump your own thread, just edit it lol.

I would also like to bring up how forums treat the mods. I spent 6 years on one forum working up from a tech mod all the way to super mod. A couple of years in, the owner sold the forum to another person that was rolling everything into a large company and that did away with forums. He kept that forum open for a while, but everyone left disgusted over the ownership change. I spent almost two years just cleaning up spam bots that made posts everyday. Finally the owner closed it down, and never once said thank or anything for me and the others that took care of the place when it was a nice thriving community to the time it was deserted.

I was a member of a forum to do with the now gone game Star Wars Galaxies and the mods on there *Sony Online Entertainment* were proper control freaks, Didn't know how to treat people, Talked down to them, You couldn't talk to them like human beings, Joking around and having a mind of your own was a big no no especially if you disagreed with the higher ups about anything.

That's why I love this forum because there are so many excellent people here and it doesn't feel like walking on egg shells ergo OC3D is the shizznitz ^_^

Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely. I suppose the mods are people who, in real life , have no real power over their circumstances (like always having to do as they are told at work and at home) so the forums are the only way they can get their power fix. It's a way of feeling empowered to do as they like.

So true, More often than not you find out they are ugly golem like people that get off on such behavior.

Seriously, Ever met some mods ? They look very "Special" lol ^_^
