Over 1 million unaccounted -for iPhones

Wow, that means reuters believe they`ve sold 4 million AT&T related phones.

They include the other world phone service providers in that ? 4 million sounds alot.

Yay! My maths worked ;)

Seems tho, that the sales that these companies keep banging out in figures are "shipped" items.

Not actually sold. They could be in stores, on shelves or... in transit ?

Either way 4m aint correct to what we would regard as "sold", not in a customers possesion shall we say. This seems to be the way the financialists are listing sales figures these days. Apparently massaging that figure with the other figures brings to perceived hacked ones down in number a fair bit.

EDIT: I think this is a freakin outrage. The more u read financial stuff about sales numbers for products up and down the market, they really mean shipped. I don`t personally think it`s viable for me to make something, send 4 thousand of them some1 in the post to sell and call it 4 thousand units sold. Every time we look at boasted figures, we need to bare this in mind.

That`s an interesting thought.

So on that basis, if microsoft ship 17 million copies of XP, they can be classed as 17 million sold copies of XP. Which is what seems to be going on. The matter that companies have 100s of XP packages each in their cupboards not going to be used, doesn`t reflect on the figures. (I`ve already cleared out cupboard of 95, 98se and ME - so I can see the storage issue, kept 1 of each for legacy app reasons believe it or not)

Also if they ship a product that the consumer never buys, it can also be recorded as a record sale if the shipment is big enough.

If Sony ship 40 million units of the PS4 on day 1 to retailers, it becomes a 40 million unit sale on that day. The larger the shipment, the bigger the claim of the biggest selling console on day 1. Doesn`t matter if the consumers are out purchasing the new Nintendo Widdle - that only shipped 20 million units to retailers.

Yes but if Microsoft shifts 40 million copies of XP to say BestBuy or someone, they have still legally sold them, whether a consumer buys them or not. MS/Sony/Ninty are just the manufacturers, not the suppliers. It is worth mentioning that Sony and Apple also run their own stores so I don't know whether that would count if say Sony Store UK bought a shipment
