Opinions wanted budget gaming rig

seems like a lot of effort just to keep your pornography collection out of sight of prying eyes? Just kidding but seriously though unless you're a spy or something do you really need to be that secure with your data. Just get a bigger hard drive and create accounts. HDD prices are on the way back down again

It is not a bad idea to use a hot swap drive with multiple users on the system. I have used a system like this in the past and it worked out well. If you want to keep you data secure then I would suggest using the hot swap. There is no need to change BIOS setting each time you switch users. A message will display on the screen warning you of the change, just hit enter and you are good to go.

Thats not right I'm sure...

Some will have an automatic failsafe to go back to the secondary hard drive boot option, it, put the internal hard drive as thesecondary, and the hotswap as the primary. ie - when the hot swap is in, it will boot off that, and when it isnt, it will boot off the internal drive.

But, some motherboards wont work like this and instead will change and lock to which ever drive the system is booting off, and if this is the case you would need to change it each time from the BIOS.

What SEBAR is suggesting sounds like the OSX bootcamp? If that's so, I didnt think you could get any program like that for windows

I the system I use there is no internal HDD. The OS and all programs are installed on the hot swap HDD. If ne HDD is in the hot swap bay then you will not be able to use the system. Each useres HDD is configured to run on the system so there should be no problems when you switch users.

So, would that not mean that you'd need two separate OS licenses? Or could you have Win7 on both HDDs under the same serial key?

It would mean that i think. Although if i was looking to do this then I would be looking into some way around this for second copy.

I also see it as pointless anyway, since you cannot use the hard drive in a different computer anyway, unless it has the same chipset so I'd still just make it internal. Or better yet, put the 2 hot swap drives together internal and do a raid configuration using user accounts.

Still, each to their own...

You have to remember that the point of using a setup like this is to keep your data secure. If you plan on using your HDD in another system then the other system would need the same hardware specs. If you are planning on making this a shared computer then the people who are sharing this computer will need to provide their own OS. for example, if this is in your dorm room or apartment where you have room mates then your room mate will need to buy his own software.

True, the os will be on a ssd that stays internal. The hotswaps will just be for media and documents and notice that they are for laptop sized hardrives which fit inside consoles which makes it more appropriate for a gamer/game developer

In this senerio you are better off just getting an external hard drive instead of waisting time with a hot swap drive.
