Only overclock further if RAM on a divider?

Hey again all. After a wee convo with Mr SAS and why I couldnt overclock further with my Vapochill, I followed his advice and tried putting the memory on a 166 divider. So far... my OC ceiling appears to have gone up. I`m now at 2.82. Still not breaking WR, but its a start.

Now... When I was on stock air, I could run 292x9 quite happily at 1:1 with the VDIMM at ~3.1V. The timings were the same as they are now. Is this down to my HT voltage? I`ve put it up as far as it`ll go but seeing as the RAM is capable of running much faster, whats going on here? Is the HT bus still running at 282? I`m not fully awake, I`ve dealt with these kind of problems before, its just totally beyond my current level of thinking.

Thanks,

Kenny :)

Update: Not SuperPi stable at 2850, with just over 1.6V across the core. Have noticed the VCore is undervolting slightly compared to the expected value, I think this is due to the vapochill?

Annoying..I was hoping I could stick with this Winchester, but I might still be looking for a replacement...

2nd Update: Got RAM back to 1:1 at 2820, but still pretty poor value for money. This thread is becoming more of a blow-by-blow account of my day. Geek reading for ppl even more bored than me :)

Your issue is one of not having a good enough PSU for the whole system.

Upgrade now to OCZ600w(quiet and powerful) or P&PC510 (even more power and not as quiet).

Never ever underestimate the importance of a good PSU.

To prove this, overclock with one stick of ram installed and remove any unecessary components, you should see an improvement that tells you this is correct.

Oh dear god I hope not, just bought a new damn PSU as it is... Will try that and see what happens. Thanks Mav, tho, TBH, I`d like you to be wrong this time! :D :p

You think its the PSu een though I can overclock at 1:1 FSB:memory?

If I had a dual- PSU loom I`d try my old PSU for the vapo and see what happens, but I dont.

:D

You could always try changing the RAM? Might be easier to borrow someone RAM to give it a go.

Or like I said, just run with the barre minimum and see how well you can clock then - Vapochill's probably sucking up the lions share of the power.

On a plus note - you've not got a bad supply there and teh re-sale value will be high - so maybe not as bad as you think.

cheers

:D hehe good idea mav, thats the one i never thought of, yet i bought a new PSU of you for the same reason :)

Hey Mav... the only RAM I got kickin around some PC3200 so the divider would be just silly, might try taking out the opticals and a stick of memory and changing my GPU to an old TNT2 I got kicking around- if that doesnt free up some power, nothing will :)

It could just be the CPU tho...nothing will go forever

Kenny

:D hehe i guess :) at least your winnie does that speed, my 2.5ghz seems rather low now. and then i have a friend that thinks his @ 2.0 is good ...

Heh Heh...You`re right I got little to complain about but for the amount I`ve spent getting this Vapo, its pretty poor value for money :) At least I appear to have insulated it right. Could be worse.... :)

Well...I tried again with a TNT2 in place of my 6600GT, and took out my opticals and I got up to 2870 SuperPi stable with about 1.65V across the core... Is that convincing enough that its the PSU- thats only 50MHz more....

Would an Enermax 600W SLI model be enough with 2x18A 12V rails, or is a PCP+C 510 the only "guaranteed" way to go to get me somewhere? :)

Thanks,

Kenny

I think Daz uses the enermax 600W SLI and his overclocking isn't too shabby :D so should be good to go with one of those in your system. I would personally buy PCP&C though :p
