Hey Guys

Recently I have noticed that randomly my USB DVD-Writer & External HDD disconnect & reconnect themselves. I have just been burning a CD when half way thru the process I get the noise that I have disconnected a USB and shortly afterward the reconnecting sound..... I have had this happen a few times now, but not everytime..

Any idea's

Hay

check the connections try it in the back see if it does it then. If it still does then it may be the external.

Seems it's only the dvdwriter and external hdd, things like keyboard & mouse dont seem to be affected, guess less power needed.

I believe I have the latest drivers

Sounds like a buggered drive to me hayles. especially if its only just started doing it.

Also make sure you USB power settings are correct in control panel.

It might have been doing it before, But I have only just noticed it..... Just seems odd its both the USB Dvd-Writer, & HDD, the thing is it can go awhile without doing it, maybe a day or so......

I have just checked in the USB Power settings, under USB it says USB Selective suspend setting is enabled (I have no idea what that even means LOL)

Sounds like something that should be disabled, that would be disconnecting any USB devices it thinks it's not using. Worth a try.

The only thing is when it does disconnect they are in use, burning a cd etc or transferring data onto the external hdd, but it reconnects straight afterwards.

I have enabled USB Legacy in bios, it was set to auto, also I have disabled that power setting in control panel, see what happens

Legacy adds support for older devices i believe, hence why i suggested turn it on,hopefully it'll help but if it was set to auto, then it should kick in when needed i'd of thought.

Should I set it back to auto, or just leave it enabled now??

Seems odd that the prob is random, for example I burnt another disc after the first one failed cuz it disconnected half way thru, when I reburnt the disc it was fine, very random lol

Should the control panel USB setting selective suspend setting be enabled or disabled?? Anyone know

I'd leave legacy enabled but as for the other i haven't come across this before.

Might be an idea to test dvd burning with it disabled and see how you fair,if it doesnt make a difference then you can probably rule that out as a cause.

I have re-enabled USB Selective Suspend Setting, as in the last 5 minutes or so, my Iphone has disconnected & reconnected about 5 times

I have checked all the connections, and they all seem to be fine, also tried it in the rear USB's and the same happening...... I'm at abit of a lose here now, as to what is causing this

Do you get the same problem with the USB 3.0 ports?

Might also be worth flashing BIOS 1 or BIOS 2 (opposite of the one you use) to the new 1301 bios released this week - see if that fixes the problem.

I have already updated the bios, yesterday to see if that fixed it.......

It's really random as doesn't seem to be doing it now.

The USB 2 ports run off the Intel ICH10 controller and the USB 3 runs off the NEC controller. Is it the same problem on both, although I can't see how it could be?

The USB 3's seem fine, also my mouse & keyboard that are plugged into the USB 2 ports seem unaffected also, the only items I have noticed it with is my external DVD rewriter, external HDD & iPhone
