Old AGP Cards

Well, after several more components dying on me ive given up the ghost for a while (till i can save up again). So im toying with the idea of turning my cellery rig into a platform that will run CSS (just). The CPU is super terrible, its got bugger all RAM and the HDD has had one foot in the grave for about a year. But the worst thing is its running on a savage S3 chip.

So:

9800pro?

5900XT?

Other?

tyia guys:wavey:

Aww unlucky ham mate - I feel for ya :(

I dont really know about the 5 series but I thought the 9800pro was decent in its time?

i could get barelt 20 fps at css everything low on amd a64 3200 @ 2.4ghz now with a 7800 gs on it i get 90+

I had a 9250 256MB - was a beast for the price and you could unlock lots of pipes and overclocked quite well :D

yeah the 9 series of ati at that time were just the best , and the fx series had prob on SM 3 so chose the ati

Ive done some reading on the 9800 and it looks like it would do the job. And can be picked up for only £30-40 these days.

Keep it comming...

Grab a 6600GT, mine runs CSS really well (lol god i need to upgrade, to bad i'm not doing it right this second and i'm waiting for summer).

My 6600gt served me well! Ran CSS medium-high and it's still in me bros machine now runnin DOD:S pretty much on high :D

tbh i suspect the rest of the system would be a bottleneck, but ive found a few nice 6800s (GT and unlockable-to-GT ones). Theyre only a tiny bit more than the 6600s, but a bit more than the 9800.

Damn decisions:(

What are you talking about? SM3 wasnt even out then. It was SM2.0 and the top gen cards where 9800XT and FX5950ultra. The 9800XT whoops the crap outa all FX cards and even some of the 6000 series (minus SM3.0 support). Your best bet would be 9800XT, 6600GT, or 6800GT. With my old machine (properly programed of course) and a 9800XT i could get about 40+ FPS maxed. Thats 1024x768, 6xAA, 16xAF, (no HDR obviously) and high settings.

(machine was 2600+ AXP, 1.5gig DC RAM, 9800XT) If you can get a 6800GT i suggest that more. Whats the rest of the system specs?

Agreed on the above. ATI really did kick the crap out of the FX series back then. Even a 9700Pro would give that FX a run for its money most likely.

Sorry - it was a 9550 saphire card I had with 256Mb of ram. Was really good I thought!!!

yes ati were the best at that time, pp mguire i dont know which sm it was but i know they didnt support it well the fx cards well from what i know the 9800 was like a 6600 nvidia so there your choice

i've got a hercules 9800pro sat it the garage doing nowt ATM if your interested.

IIRC it was a great little clocker, it has old copper cpu heatsink modded to fit the gpu and a 60mm fan bolted to it. I'll dig it out and take some photos
