Hi Guys,

I've got an E6600, a P5B Deluxe and 6400 800mhz Ram (4-4-4-12). I've been overclocking it today and everything was going great; I was running happily at 3.2ghz (355x9) and decided to try switching to (400 x8)..... I saved the settings it started to boot and then it powered off.

Now I can't even get the motherboard to post. I get a black screen and no beeps. I've tried clearing the CMOS and I get the same thing. The system powers on for a second or so (all the fans start up), the power cuts out, it restarts and then I just get a black screen. I've tried taking out all the ram and just booting on one module, but that doesn't work. If I take out all the ram I don't get any beeps or anything. :(

Any ideas what has died? do you think its just the mainboard? or it be the CPU as well? will I be able to get away with RMA'ing it? not sure what to tell the place I bought it from.

has any one got any advice or solutions?

thanks in advance....

Umm, unplug the PSU from mobo, and take out CMOS battery, pray.

I don't know if this trick works on Asus board but pop the CMOS battery out for about 30 mins (that's what it took on my old DFI LP's) and then put it back in, then give it another boot.

Almost exact same thing happend with my p5b-d - I didn't drop the multi like you but I was just increasing the fsb - it did the same thing as yours. I had to RMA it... Got a full refund.

Hopefully yours will recover

Yeh I hope so to. I've just popped out the battery again and changed the jumper for the CMOS reset. I'll leave it for a while and see what happens. I've also unplugged the powercables to the mainboard (and I have the cuts from my scythe infinity to prove it!)

What did you tell the company that you bought the board from? I guess I'll just have to play ignorant [nothing to do with me guv....]

I really hope its not the processor...

This happened to me all the time on my P5B & this Commando. I normally do this:

Turn PSU off and take cable out

Clear CMOS using the jumper/button

Take all memory modules out

Plug power back in and switch PC on (with the memory modules still out)

Leave it powered on for 30 seconds

Switch off and unplug from mains again.

Insert a single module into a slot that wasn't used before.

Try switching on again.

Like XMS said, his recovered all the time, I was unlucky.

I just said it stopped working (faulty), had to send it to them, bought a new mobo with the intention to sell the p5b if it came back repaired.

2 weeks later I got a full refund. :D

Yeah they are a little funny. I thought i'd killed my p5b with water damage as it was going like the above. So I sold to someone dirt cheap on eBay (marked as broken of course), and when they got it it bloody worked fine for em. lol

Remember the praying lol

Good luck with that

Makes me wonder if the P5Bs and the commandos are more of a pain than other boards? Or is it just the 965 chipset?

Thanks for all the help guys.. but unfortunately I can't get any joy out of it even after trying all those things. Its a real pain.

Guess I'll have to make some phone calls on monday.... :(

Is it more likely its the mainboard than the processor? what would happen if the processor was dead? I know when I was first setting the machine up it would beep if there wasn't a hard disk attached, and its definitely not doing that either now... and also no beeps with the ram out.

Sorry about that m8

Makes me fear OCin lol

I VERY much doubt its the processor. Get a replacement board and i'm pretty sure you'll be fine.

If it does turn out to be the processor (and you bought retail and not OEM) it will be under warranty and you can get it replaced by Intel if the place you bought it from wont take it back.

Have you tried moving the jumper to reset the BIOS and then applying power and hit the power button, the board should attempt to power up but then stop. Then remove the power, reset the jumper and then power up. I have an Asus P4800E-Dlx and have had to use the above to get me out of a few pickles in the past.

Yes, I've tried that to, its no good. It still powers on for a second, powers off and then on again and I don't get any display. If I pop the CPU out the behavour does change; it doesn't power off after turning it on, but what that tells me I don't know.

Anyone got any advice on alternative motherboards, or should I just get another P5B-Deluxe?

It really depends on what you are looking for in your motherboard. The P5B is still pretty much the undisputed overclocking champ. The Asus Commando offers everything the P5B does + a bit of bling or you could go for the DFI RD600 which is a nice board but still needs a few new BIOS versions to hit puberty.

If you've done everything suggested previously, then chances are extremely high that it's a dead board. There have been quite a few posts about the P5B/Deluxe boards going south after overclocking, and the 965's particularly hate the 350 - 400mhz area. Like Jim said, look at the ASUS Commmando or the DFI RD600 as alternatives

Have you tried it without any RAM and minus the video card? From what I can gather an event needs to occur which would force it to update the BIOS, that's what I sort of gathered when I problems with my p4800e-dlx.

Where abouts are and can you not just rma the mobo instead of buying another?

Yeh I've tried that as well.

I'm in the UK. Yeah, I'm definitely going to RMA the board, I was just thinking about buying a new one on next day delivery(for quickness) and asking for a refund for the dead one (being inpatient).

Thanks for all your help and advice everyone !
