Following OCZ's filing for bankruptcy last week, Toshiba is now officially acquiring OCZ's assets for $35 million. This includes all of OCZ's ssd buisness (both business and consumer) including; controller IP, firmware, software and teams which created them.

There is no official word yet on the fate of OCZ's other products, like power supplies and cooling. This all should be clarified at a later date.

The acquisition of OCZ should be completed in the next 60 days. OCZ will continue to operate and serve existing and future customers during this process, but it unknown whether this will continue after the sale is finalised.

Toshiba claim that this deal is a clear win for them, saying “our leading NAND technology with OCZ's SSD expertise will allow us to further strengthen Toshiba's SSD business”.

What do you think of this sale? I'm personally glad to see OCZ gone and I hope Toshiba can do good things with these assets.

Lets hope Toshiba's expertise in not making products that catch fire or/and die after a month goes straight into OCZ. I almost wonder if OCZ is going to end up being the gaming brand for Toshiba?

Are they serious about "leading NAND technology" because as far as I know Toshiba has not been considered as such a great SSD brand. Please correct me if I am wrong.

one problem with OCZ was that they didn't produce their own nand and had to buy it in, this is more expensive than making it themselves as the producer needs a profit (also producers tend to keep their best nand for their own products).

This was one factor of many which killed OCZ's profitability, combined with bad quality controls and a steady stream of returns the company was doomed to fail.

Toshiba lack good controller tech for ssds and now they have OCZ's to play with, that combined with their own nand production should yield good products.

so long as Toshiba use good quality controls, they should do well in the ssd market in the future.

Cant really fault OCZ for the high failure rates on their ssd line, the manufacturers monopolize all the good stuff :/

OCZ would actually be a great face for Toshiba as Toshiba's marketing is laughable.

As a business student I can't help but think 35 million dollars is incredibly cheap?? Things really must've been bad over at OCZ but then again I guess considering the rep they have here that's no surprise

Toshiba determinately bought OCZ for dirt cheap there, there have been companies that OCZ have bought over for around that price.
OCZ bought a company called Indilinx for $32 million back in 2011, its funny to see a company who was able to buy other companies for such a price fail so badly to sell for that themselves.

The only OCZ product I've ever had is an Equalizer gaming mouse that I'm using after 5 years in my secondary system. One of the better mice I've had.

Anyway, Toshiba did quite well; they've now got the Indilinx Barefoot controllers and all the IP that goes along with them. Given the later versions of SSDs from OCZ that had those controllers performed quite well, they've got themselves quite the deal.

EDIT: Apparently they're still hiring though, despite bankruptcy and all.

tbh this was clearly going to happen i can't even remeber the last time that ocz were making money and atleast they have been sold to someone like toshiba who can hopefully build on the great stuff that ocz have been doing for the last couple of years

Whoa, thats pocket change...

Their manufacturing facilites are worth at least double that.

Kudos to the CEO/Board for opting not to close the company and sell all assets, but rather sell the company and keep former employees employed...

Yeah i agree, Its hopefully just an investment to Toshiba and im glad that the people have still got their jobs, even though it looks like we are (slowly) getting out of the recession jobs are still hard to come by.

Good guy Toshiba lol :) And hopefully OCZ becomes a better named brand.

Toshiba nand is used in a lot of other companies SSD. Toshiba actually manufactures nand like Samsung and therefore sells them to other companies. Acquiring OCZ and Indillix will allow them full control over SSD/Nand quality and customized firmware. Should help produce nice products, sort of the same situation Samsung has with their control of the same stuff.
