OC3D Spam...

As most of you will have noticed, Overclock3D has recently been subject to a lot of SPAM message postings.

These differ from the SPAM messages we have been combating in the past as rather than starting new threads (which the moderator team can normally delete before you get to see them), they are instead replying to existing threads, causing waves of "New reply notification" emails being sent out to the members who have subscribed to the affected threads.

Unfortunately, due to the way in which the spammers are manually verifying their new accounts on OC3D, traditional image verification measures during the registration process are not stopping them.

Therefore, until the attacks stop on OC3D we will be manually vetting every new member registration before allowing them to post on the site.

This should stop them, bit of a pain for the mods though, so good luck! I wonder why there's the sudden influx of spammers?

Just what is the point of spamming?

Yeah its just causing extra work for us. Totally and utterly pointless when you consider that most spam messages posted on here don't last much longer than 5 minutes.

There are some sites that give you money to spam on some websites afaik. You spend 5 mintues spamming for like 10p

Damn, that's harsh. I don' about it too much, but some of the links are a bit dubious. Some of them are scams. [education and or reminder] If they offer technology/oil/animals/anything at a very low price, it's a scam. If they ask you to pay by Western Union/MoneyGram, it's probably a scam. Watch out for yourselfs [/education and or reminder]

Seems harsh on you mods to have to check out everyone. Hope it Doesn't stop too many people joining up.

Do you want us to report the spam? Or shall we just assume you'll find it? Also i usually just report one post by the spammer and point out that they are all crap. Is that cool?

Yeah hopefully it shouldn't be too bad. So far this afternoon two out of the three registrations have been spammers. You can tell almost immediately because they have no idea what to enter in as their system specs.

Yeah carry on reporting please. One report is good enough as the new system allows us to delete all of a users posts, ban them and block their IP all in one swoop.

Will a different, harder verification thing stop them? Rapidshare have a hard one as do some forums where u have to answer a question such as "Name the tallest mountain"

Yeah we've switched to questions now too. Unfortunately spammers go through the registration process manually (human) and then set up the spambot with the username/password they chose, and spam away.

I think they have put something like that on now. It stops bots, but real people can use google to find something like that out.
