Nvidia - rumours of GPU socket

I would say the main problem is that with pci/agp cards, the heat is brought away from the motherboard, and the processor.

Slightly off topic - Why don't they put the GPUs on the other sides of the cards? I mean the way a graphics card fits into a slot in a tower case, the GPU is facing downwards and any airflow created by having an exaust fan at the back of the case just pulls air over the top of the graphics card (i.e. the part with no bits soldered on) so it doesn't get any fresh air.

not sure, might be something in the pci specification that says which way up things have to be, otherwise you'd have thought somone would have thought of it. Who knows? All the cards i've ever seen have been the smae way up so i'm guessing it's not coincidence

I'm not 100% sure why, but I would be inclined to say it is done to stop dust clogging up the fan, as the dust would just cover the top of the card, and also as cases vary in size and shape, its to stop the heatsink on the card interfereing with the psu.
