Nvidia reportedly order 12nm fab space at TSMC

Nvidia has reportedly ordered 12nm fab space at TSMC, potentially creating their upcoming Volta GPUs or Xavier SoCs on the new production node.

I highly doubt they won't give the 1080ti a year lifespan. That means Volta won't be out until early 2018. Volta coming out this year would bring a major shift to the market.

Think that depends on how long they held back the ti, and lets be honest, nvidia arnt shy about pushing products out of the way if they think there is keching kaaa ching at the end of it.

Unless Vega smashes the TI I cant imagine Volta will be out till early 2018 nvidia will have no need

Think that depends on how long they held back the ti, and lets be honest, nvidia arnt shy about pushing products out of the way if they think there is keching kaaa ching at the end of it.

It's true that they could earn a lot of money with Volta, but they could also earn a lot of money with the 1080ti. With nothing to match it they can continue to sell it at $700 and make a killing just like they did with the 980ti. Why rush out Volta when Pascal reigns supreme?

They could, but imagine how much money they will make droping the 1080ti price by $100 and dropping volta on peoples laps, how many here with 1080s which are more then enough for gaming right now just got rid of there 1080s like the were stolen and got 1080ti's because there the new shiney.

I don't think that's the way business works. If a product is already serving its purpose and is selling well and is manageable it will remain for sale in the current stack. There is no point rushing Volta out. People will sell their 1080ti's for it whether it's a year from now or eight months from now.

Volta gamer card will not release in 2017, workstation card perhaps. The next GTX card will be Pascal Refresh, that has been known for quite some time.

When have Nvidia done this in the last five years? Since the 500 series I can't see any example of Nvidia so deliberately stepping on their own toes in anything except the Titan series. And they have done that so systematically and with the logic that the Titan was for both consumers and prosumers that you can only blame yourself for jumping on the Titan bandwagon if you are purely a gamer.

I don't see Nvidia tricking that many people. Nvidia's mind share does have limits. I think you're discrediting Nvidia users a little too much and giving Nvidia too much credit.

And a good example, by the time the partners got the 980 series all solid and people were jumping on it, looking at you evga 980 hybrid and then a week or so later the 980ti dropped.

They do though, because of the path they have chosen. They have decided to roll on regardless of AMD it would seem, as the 1080 came out less than a year ago with the Titan X 7 months ago. That is the same path they took with the Titan - 780, the Titan Black - 780ti and the Titan X - 980ti. The only change is the price.

And when you are charging £700 for a GPU or more the market is quick and short. Sales will start drying up pretty quick, as you've left nothing cheap really.

So yeah, I think Volta will be right on schedule and they will want their payday it'll just be bum-bleedingly expensive.

Having said that? if you are a serious gamer and game every single day then the Volta Titan will be the card to buy. It will last longer than any other Volta. I mean, these guys who bought 1080s are now buying the TI. They could have just saved, bought the Titan and got a much longer life span out of it.

The EVGA 980 Hybrid releasing at the time it did was not because of Nvidia releasing a new architecture to relinquish it and remove it from its perch. We both knew the 980ti was coming and a water cooled 980 was very much still a valid product. Its pricing was up the wazoo, but that's EVGA for you.

And onto the fact we knew the tis are coming, yes we always know the tis are coming but the timing of them is key, and the 1080ti could have come out last year, we dont know how long they held it back or the impact that has on the volta release if any at all.

No, they don't say that, but I believe the consumers have more power than you give them credit for and will not collectively replace their £700 GPU with another £700 GPU after only eight months when another more powerful GPU is almost guaranteed to be another seven months away. Some will of course, but Nvidia don't want some, they want them all. They have to be clever and pace themselves. I can't expect a 1180 (or 2080 or whatever it's going to be called) to come until early 2018. I'd be very surprised (and very sad for AMD and those that bought 1080's and 1080ti's) if it does. But who knows, right?
