DDR-2 MEMORY is poised to go sky-high in demand, after Nvidia decided to introduce a part using the memory in its line-up.
After a fairly unsuccessful DDR-2 debut with FX 5800 and the Radeon 9800Pro 256MB series, DDR-2 disappeared from the world of graphic accelerators and left the market for DDR-I and GDDR3, which is the memory of choice for high end boards.
However, things change. With practically every player on the market ramping up DDR-2 memory production, it was a question of time before it got reintroduced as a replacement for DDR-1 based boards.
GeForce 6600 DDR-2 is the name of the new product from Nvidia. The board comes with boosted specs compared to the original 6600. The GPU clock is raised 15% to 350MHz, while DDR-2 memory rocks at 800MHz, ccompared to 550MHz on the original 6600s. That raises theoretical bandwidth by a full 4GB/s to 12.8GB/s. The amount of memory is boosted as well, from 128MB to 256MB - thanks to Nvidia using BGA packaging, which takes less space than the old fashioned TSOP.

The board is SLI-ready, but with no bridge as Nvidia calls bridgeless-SLI boards “Mainstream SLI Ready”. Expect this baby in the shops very soon.
