The performance gap between a 1070 and 1080 is small, This is pointless, OR, It's a pipe cleaner product.
Depends, On a lot of things I've seen around a 10-15FPS difference in 1440P, Not really that big.

AMD managed to fit 2 Vega's between the 1070 and 1080 so I imagine it's just to spice up competition with Vega. It's probably just a low binned 1080 with some stuff disabled.
What you described is exactly what a 1070 is
I think the leak is fake. Volta comes out in about 6/7 months. Pascal has been out over a year. Doesn't make much sense. Their yields are far too high to risk adding another card in an already crowded market. Would be basically competing with themselves.
What is a "pipe cleaner product"?...
I don't understand why this would need to exist. There is a pretty big hole between the 1070 and 1080, yes, but there is a bigger hole between the 1080 and the 1080Ti. That's where I hoped Vega would come in at. If anything that's where the bigger market would be. A €650 GPU that slots inbetween the 1080 and 1080Ti. Vega would be completely swamped and would sell only to compute users (and those foolish enough to trust in Freesync).
They want to beat the 56 at the same price. And still sell 1080's
